Will Law Enforcement Support Trump's Immigration Plans?
The Atlantic ^ | December 30, 2016 | Priscilla Alvarez

In an interview with 60 Minutes last month, President-elect Donald Trump made yet another pledge to remove undocumented immigrants from the United States, saying he would deport up to 3 million of them who “have criminal records.” Similar promises—like building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and blocking federal funding to so-called sanctuary cities—were a cornerstone of his campaign. But as he assumes the presidency, Trump will face not only continued public opposition to his plans, but potential obstruction by state and local law enforcement who he would need to implement any new policies.

In many cases, federal immigration agents rely on local and state police forces to identify individuals who are in violation of immigration laws, and if so, to turn them over to the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration-enforcement arm. Rick Su, a law professor at the University at Buffalo who has researched immigration and local government, explains the significance of the cooperation this way: “The fact of the matter is, local law enforcement in this country encompasses the vast majority of law-enforcement resources.” He added: “As much as we talk about federal policy and the growth of the federal government, their capabilities are quite limited given how large the country is.”(continued)

Wrong question. The police chief will salute whatever orders the mayor and city council give him, if he wants to keep his job. The officers below him will do likewise.

It will all depend on what will motivate the politicians on top — like being held personally responsible for violations of federal law.

Yes, you point out a problem which should be solved when the federal funding is cut.

Trump could extend pardons if things get messy, but in general, local law enforcers have to enforce federal law or face these consequences.

If a LEO refuses to enforce the law, he can be easily fired. Refuse to do his job? Door.

If they won’t Trump will just send in the NG to do the job, just look in all the jails, restaurants, roofers, etc. Plenty of out of work Americans to fill the void.

Absolutely, at the rank and file level.

Trump will purge the necessary “management”.

Trump doesn’t have to do much arm-bending with LEO. He simply has to start enforcing laws already on the books.

The thin blue line will. The political law enforcement powers that be will follow the power of money.

I work in probably sanctuary city number one, San Francisco, and I don’t see this as a huge problem for Trump, He can start with voluntary cooperatives, which will be all but about 50. Then proceed to those cities located in states with Republican governors and/or legislature’s. That will leave about five cities, Examples should be made out of them, with every crime perpetrated by an illegal alien plastered all over Trump’s Twitter account, right.wing media etc., not mention cutting off their federal funding, They’ll cry uncle pretty quickly.

The rank and file will be for him. It is the liberal mayors and police chiefs who will oppose him. And they will continue to break the law and harbor illegal aliens until Trump withholds funding.

And turns Sessions loose on them....
