I think it was Russia that first felt the global pain of having their soldiers captured and beheaded on camera and posted to the internet by the Aghani rebels (or imported jihadi’s as we might now suspect), when they were in the Russian/Afghanistan war of the 80’s/90’s

They have been forced to lead the world since the US abdicated and Putin has done a remarkable job, IMO.
