Why should I have to pay for their college? No one paid for mine.

Yep ... keep the queen out, and use O's zero-recovery to get some of the yoot on the good side. It's not particularly responsible ... but also ... O screwed them (and everyone else.) There is so much defaulting that the lenders might go for it on a negotiation mixed and it might not be a huge government hand out. Oh, shut up self, of course it's going to be a hand out ... but ...

Hopefully the lesson out of this exercise is that non-vocational degrees not paired with at least a double major in a 'real career degree' ... loans should not be made against those degrees, or else students should have to sign 'I will not hold anyone else responsible for my 120K debt on my women's 18th century muslim transgender poetry degree.'

Perfect is the enemy of the good. I don't like it either ... but I can deal with it. Trump won't use it as a gimme-free-stuff thing, and he'll stick it to the lenders hard while not bankrupting them.

I can imagine that their focus groups developed the potential of this as a policy position in terms of millennial voters, but they may have failed to consider its implication for fiscal conservatives. A federally guaranteed student loan, once disbursed, can be viewed as a zero sum game. If the borrower doesn’t pay it back, the taxpayer does. Many student loans are paid back within 15 years, but a lot aren’t. If Junior went to Brown and paid full boat, took 5 years to graduate and then maybe lingered to earn additional degrees, you can be looking at $200K+ easily. If he does not apply himself, or chooses a low income trajectory in public service, there can be a lot of principal balance left a the end of 15 years for the federal taxpayer to shoulder. I realize that Trump may be concerned about Hillary’s pandering to millennials, but the answer is not to try and out pander her. This is a good example of where Trump’s lack of deep conservative principles are showing, and I think it nets him nothing in terms of votes.

I sacrificed and saved over all the years so my kids can go to college without loans.

Now I’m going to get punished for it.

” called for a single student loan repayment plan capped at 12.5% of a borrowers’ income and suggested borrowers would see their student debt forgiven after 15 years of making full payments.”

Will I be able to get a mortgage with those terms?

I paid off my loans a long time ago. Can I apply for forgiveness and get a refund?

This is not American Donald Trump. It is liberal wealth redistribution.

As far as I know, this is the first time he’s expressed details about managing student loans, and how he proposes to deal with the cost of higher education and governmant-backed loan guarantees, going forward. He’s aiming to take a bite out of Crooked’s share of the millenial vote.

Let us see. If one goes to one of the Military Academies they have to sign up for five years of active duty.

After 5 years (and they get paid the same as if they paid for their own college) the obligation is paid off.

If I had to buy a new car to be able to work for a Uber type company, will the Govt subsidize my car payments?

No, they would rather 'pay' me unemployment or welfare - then allow me SSD saying I was 'stressed out' over the embarrassment of drawing unemployment or welfare for all those years....

I do NOT want the govt to buy me a car or truck, just being absurd for the sake of absurdity.

borrowers would see their student debt forgiven after 15 years of making full payments. “We’re going to work it out. It’ll be a negotiation,” Trump said,

As long as the negotiation ends on, say, thirty years of full payments.

That is charitable of me. I worked and sacrificed to pay my loans off. It sucked and I still bear the scars, but it taught me another facet of discipline. I have no sympathy for those who choose a silly course of study and find themselves buried under a mountain of debt when they realize their degree in the linguistics of latent lesbianism isn't marketable.

Honestly, I would be ok with this if we deny student loans for degrees that don’t have an Return on Investment.

If the amount of incremental income from a degree isn’t projected to pay off the loan in 15 years, no loan for you.

If the deal involves a bunch of funding cuts to useless liberal nonsense programs that plague public universities, then count me in ... it’ll be less expensive doing things this way vs. piles and piles of defaults that will triple-screw us!

The entire program of loaning to students needs to be reworked. It dumped way to much money on the education market with zero interest in the actual students. The whole reason colleges are as liberal as they are is simply because they get the kickbacks for money from these federal loan programs.

They don’t care about education. They care about money, and what the government has given to them. Its a horribly inflated market which found sweet money making lower-middle to upper class students front the liability for debts they were coached into making.

Where this started was with government and people who sold one generation away with bad education combined with bad policy.

I think he is targeting Bernie Sanders people. Trying to take advantage of the backlash from Wikileaks about Clinton’s dirty tricks against Sanders supporters.

I have no idea what Trump will actually do if he gets the presidency. For me its not about Trump anymore...Its about not letting Clinton back into the Whitehouse. The supreme court and gun rights.

I think he may need to take from Clinton’s support to win. Undoing the damage against those who actually are voting for Clinton just because she is a woman, is pointless in this time frame. But proving that Clinton is just another globalist and she stole Sanders chance for the whitehouse is a much easier hill to climb.
