This video shows Todd Orr a former Trails Engineer at Gallatin National Forest records himself talking about the aftermath of a bear attack that he encounter while on a hike. He stated, "he had pepper spray with him and did use it to defend himself but wasn't much help, but it was better than nothing.
Here's the excerpt from the video:
Yeah, life sucks in Bear Country. Just had a Grisley with two cubs come at me from about 80 yards and, uh, I sprayed the shit out of her with bear spray, and then I went on my face and protected the back of my neck. She got my head good, I don't know what's under my hat; my ear, my arm -ugh, pieces of stuff hangin out, I dunno what's going on in there- and then my shoulder's ripped up, I think my arm's broke, but my legs are good, internal organs are good, eyes are good, I just walked out three miles, now I gotta go to the hospital. So. Be safe out there. Bear spray doesnt always work, but its better than nothin'! See the video here.
This is all very well documented fact.

Etc.
I had a .44 mag when younger, I recall it kicked very hard.
Don’t think my arthritic hands could take it. The thought of all the pain would likely make my hands shake, as well as something that big and deadly coming at us. Shooting my 12 ga is quite painful.
The idea is to take out the CNS in order to stop a grizzly, which means face & head shots, or so I’ve read.
A true story, we were in the Shoshone Forest (just south of this one), stayed at a lodge, and a grizzly came into the camp, was teased by an idiot and promptly charged. The idiot climbed a tree, and the bear just patiently waited for him to come down. He was rescued by several pickups surrounding the tree so he could get down.
So plan B would be to climb a tree.
Nonetheless, I enjoy the excitement and photo ops.
Minimum handgun for grizzlies is a .44 Magnum (with heavy bullets). Minimum.
Keep in mind that the F&G guys who deal with them use 12 gauge shotguns with slugs.
Ive seen white tail deer on several occasions run 80 yds with a heart shot that destroyed the organ. In one case it literally was split open in a such a way that it appeared flat and rigid
Animal adrenaline is strong stuff
Polar bears go 800 to 1200 lbs. Much smaller than a griz.
Bear eats Doug’s head.... not really.

“I assume because this happened well wway from human habitation that this bear will get a pass from the Rangers.
It should, its a Mama Bear, Mama Grizzly it sounds like.”
This happened in Montana - and, yes, the FWP Rangers will track down this bear and relocate it and the cubs. If it has a history it will be destroyed.
We don’t screw around with bears here in Montana.
“We dont screw around with bears here in Montana.”
I do remember that young man that was killed a few months ago in Montana. Sad, I think that was a bad male bear. I haven’t heard much on this since the initial incident.
There is probably a difference between a Kodiak Grizzly and a Rocky Mountain West Grizzly per size. I have seen a Polar Bear in the wild, stood up it seemed to 12 feet high, maybe taller. Of course, this is all anecdote and not scientific expertise.
I’m in the Bitterroot and there was a sub adult Grizzly roaming around here, west of Victor, three years ago. Many of my neighbors saw it.
FWP wouldn’t even come out to confirm.
I carry a .44 mag in a chest holster.
I’m just outside Bozeman in the foothills - last year We had a black bear get into our trash several times. He wasn’t too big and my six shot burst BB pistol sent him away.
Be safe, FRiend!
I wonder what kind of spray he had, grade A type of Bear spray or just a general pepper spray. You’d think he’d have the best kind of bear spray though, so carrying would be better.
I remember the incident of a few months ago, a Mountain Biker who also was a Federal worker for the parks was killed.

How about a nice big bear taser! :-)
LOL!! How true!
I think that was Tim (or Scott) Treadwell who wanted to be “one with these great animals”. He forgot that food was scarce that year for the bears, so they took him instead.
The 9mm would be perfect for one suicidal shot to the brain.
What? I heard the opposite, as the polar bear being the largest land predator.
Don't knock it....
Sure....if you don’t hit them in the hind end..
Bears do what...bears do.
