It is difficult to imagine such levels of poverty existing in the most powerful nation on earth - but it does in McDowell County, West Virginia.
Abandoned shops, closed schools and neglected homes are visible on almost every corner in every distressed community.
Whole families are plagued by the consequences of unemployment and widespread drug abuse.
The average life expectancy for men is 64 - the same as Namibia.
But it was not always like this. McDowell was once a hustling and bustling town, thriving off the riches of the coal industry.
The reliance on one industry proved fatal and boom soon turned to bust.
The collapse of coal and thousands of jobs has left the county a crumbling shell of its former self.

These people are hurting, many are democrats, and they know that electing Hillary will only make matters for them worse.
There are pockets of poverty like this all around America.
This portends well for Donald Trump.
“This portends well for Donald Trump.”
Indeed.
What a tremendous thing it will be to revive these cities and towns. And give these Americans their lives back.
Heart wrenching story of the “plain folk,” discarded humanity right in our backyard. People who want to work being robbed of their self respect by socialist ideologues who don’t give a damn about them or the country. It’s evil on display.
"...Matt McPeak, a former miner turned heroin addict who lives in the town of Welch, says his community has been forgotten and left behind to live "like dogs".
"There are no jobs and nothing but drugs," he told ITV News. "They're [his friends] dying - I buried one the other day. It's overdose after overdose."
Attempts to diversify the local economy have failed. A nearby federal prison employs 305 people but only 41 members of the workforce come from Welch. Locals who do seek work at the prison fall at the first hurdle - by failing a mandatory drugs test..."
It appears the county voted for Mitt in 2012 and The Won in ‘08.

Then, the totalitarians come in to dictate.
6. But the grand nostrum will be a public debt...
11. As soon as sufficient progress in the intended change shall have been made, and the public mind duly prepared according to the rules already laid down, it will be proper to venture on another and a bolder step toward a removal of the constitutional landmarks.
War. November 8. Be there.
Soap box, ballot box,
But just look at the explosion of drug addiction throughout the country, the overdoses, the crime, the poverty.
This is 0bama's true legacy.
Yeah, but if Trump gets elected they'll take away your welfare... < /Democrat response >
Fewer consequences = more crime.
Coal didn't collapse. It was killed by the Democrats. And it was done so to destroy the country.
This happened to towns in Oregon when the logging industry was put out of business.
What does that say about America, when faced with adversity, everyone turns to drugs? I don’t see how we made it past WWII.
If I were Trump, I would announce the immediate rollback of the regulations that killed coal and offer an incentive for coal gasification plants that would help reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
Here in Alabama it is bad. Many working class people can’t even afford a mobile home. There are RV campgrounds springing up all over. However these are not being used by retirees seeing the country. People are living in these camps full time. Some can buy an RV but many of them rent.
Now I am starting to see wood garden sheds being set up for housing. Most have no plumbing. They are either in the RV camps or in rural areas in friends or families yards. The people in this fix generally are working. Thanks democrats.
Mining coal is still dangerous and dirty, but it is a life.
Betcha the Coal Miner’s Union ordered the men to vote for Obama, TWICE!
These are “The Coal People” Bill Clinton is making fun of.
