Leupold Scopes – Quality In View

If you didn't know - Leupold Blends High Capacity With Quality, State-of-the-art Recycling To Produce Top Optics

The Leupold & Stevens factory in Beaverton, Ore., just west of Portland, stands on the far edge of a grassy, wooded hill at the end of a long, curving driveway, and the distance from the public street to the front door is just far enough to put one of their popular riflescopes or range finders to the test. Standing at the sign out front, the headquarters could be taken for a small college or public library. Instead, this unassuming facility houses a beehive of activity in a multistory structure that cuts deeply down and into the hill, making the factory much larger – and more secure – than it appears. Despite its humble appearance, the campus supports more than 650 employees.

I recently visited Leupold for a tour courtesy of Dave Domin, one of the company’s marketing and communication specialists. My visit encompassed the entire production process from beginning to end and included a review of their state-of-the-art recycling program. Read the rest of the Leupold story here.

Leupold-Stevens is a fine Oregon business... Along with Nosler.

It depends on how much accuracy you're talking about. This is what a 4MOA dot looks like at different ranges on a standard silhouette target. Fairly simple and lethal out to 250 yards. Even at 300, if you try for a head shot you'll hit something else important.

Just this afternoon, I got to shoot a silenced FN SCAR rifle in .308 equipped with a $4,000. Steiner Intelligent Combat Sight. Amazing. Just add $3,000 for the rifle plus the silencer cost.

Leupold is like a Toyota Tacoma

Reliable and effective and good value but not the best

A solid 6.5-7

Vortex makes a nice red dot sight, too - the Strikefire II. Not as compact (or pricey) as the stuff from Aimpoint, but they work well.

I heartily recommend the Aimpoint PRO (Patrol Rifle Optic). It ain’t cheap but it’s one of the best low-mid prices reflex optics available.

"..They’re middle of the road price wise and are fine if you set it and forget it. Great warranty too. If you twist turrets though their weakness starts to show.."

Agreed on middle of the road price-wise.
Agreed on great warranty. Although I've only tested it once.
But I call total BS on that s'posed "weakness". I've used Leupolds from that goofy l'il 1-4 CQB gizmo to 45x benchrest scopes. And I've spent a lot of time in the groundhog fields crankin those turrets. The RTZ is great. I will concede that it's a bit closer if you approach zero from the same direction every time. But outside of that they've all been balls-on.

IMO they're right in the beefy part of the "value curve". Scopes are like everything else. They'll let ya spend all ya want. I've tried Nightforce and a few others. And keep comin back to Leupold.
Vortex has some nice glass, but an import scope that costs as much as good American craftsmanship is not palatable here.

This opinion and $1 might get you a coffee at McDoogles. d;^)

general thinking is that you want your AR to own everything inside 300 yards. My thinking is that I want my AR capable of performing surgery anywhere inside of 300 yards.

Big long term fan of Leupold ...... Recently got to peer through David Tubbs Leupold Mk 8 with his own custom DTR reticle. He’s up in the NE corner of the Panhandle and has a great little shop all should visit.

Now where did I lay that 5 grand for a scope ?:o)

Know of a shop that has the Vortex 15X Recon R/T 15x50 Monocular ? They seem to be as rare as a three balled cat here in Texas.

Don’t get me wrong, I just looked in my closet and counted (13) Leupold boxes, so I’m not a hater, but my tall target tests reveal something different from your experience. It doesn’t detract from them as I don’t know anyone who makes units on a 1” body that dial well.

Probably not the reasonable price point you’re looking for, but a worthwhile thread to read for background.

I prefer the Rex review. He is like a specialist user of long distance shooting. Nutnfancy is kind of meh...

In short, get the Super Sniper x10 for budget, if not the US Optics S10 is top notch all American , alternatively Schmidt Bender

Yeah good quality scopes evidently very much in demand, but seem to be rare at even the big box stores here....

Leupolds, Nightforce and Trijicons pretty much for now.

Stay Safe !

I love the specs on this, but for about the same price I can get a package DD 556 set up with a Track Point. (~$5000 rifle plus track point scope set up)
