Tactical Use of the AR-15
AShooting Journal ^ | 7/21/2016 | J Hines

Posted on 07/21/2016 11:55:43 AM PDT by w1n1

Everybody has an AR because of its reliability, durability and flexibility. Besides owning a shotgun an AR is the next best thing for a home defense.

This video highlights Richard Nance (GunsandAmmo Editor) and Dave Spaulding (Handgun Combatives) discussing tactics and techniques using an AR-15 which any lawful citizen can learn.

They talk about best ways to enter and clear a room while not extending your AR out there. But if you do there are some weapon retention methods that can be used to retain your AR. See the video here. How bout you all, do you use your AR-15 for home defense?

I prefer pointing my fingers and saying, “Pew pew!” It works really well.

You’re right. The article is absolute drivel. I watched m-16 rounds hundreds of yards out climb trees and rip off limbs at any number of angles. You wouldn’t think a round could go in a circular direction.

Pistol for problems in the house, 12 gauge for problems in the yard and a full sized battle rifle in 7.62 for problems further away. I wish I had an excuse to by a 50 BMG.

Federal used to make a expanding full metal jacket cartridge. Looks like they still do but under the "Guard Dog" brand. I've always thought this was a neat way to handle a expanding bullet.

Yep. Mossberg 590 next to bed using 0000 Buck.

I think you mean #4 Buck.

0000 Buck is 0.380 inches in diameter.

ARs are nice and all, but I think I’d prefer to leave the home defense to Colt, Glock & Mossberg.

I have mine loaded in #4. Nice size, about like a BB.

That was interesting and surprising. All three rounds had nearly identical penetration. The .556 was stopped at panel 16 and the 00buck and 9mm were stopped at panel 15. So they all penetrated seven wall sections.

My house is admittedly not that big but I couldn’t line up more than three wall sections anywhere in it. I wish they had stated what thickness of drywall they used. It’s hard to tell from a video but it looked thicker than 1/2” which is the standard drywall used on interior walls.

Ask the renowned firearms expert Gersh KUNTzman ... he wrote a big article about it.

Inside the confines of a home, I'd prefer a handgun with hollow points to a rifle. Especially if there are multiple family members in the home. An AR round will penetrate drywall like a knife going through butter.

Have you seen the real world testing?

What are good loads for a .20 gauge? One for home defense, the other for birds (quail, pheasants, etc.)

Lol yeah I caught that thread...that dude probably sits down to piss, after asking his boyfriend for permission.

This is my first AR; after the first shot I thought there was something wrong with it because it kicked so lightly. My shoulder is used to ‘06, .308, and 12g.

“How bout you all, do you use your AR-15 for home defense?”

If I lived in the country maybe. I’m in a subdivision shoulder-to-shoulder with neighbors.
S&W pistol, caliber .40 hollowpoints and a backup shotgun with buck.
A .223/5.56 round would go through the burglar and walls.
