But Senator John McCain had other ideas, as now he's introduced legislation in with the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 that will have the 1911's destroyed and recycled into components or different firearms.
SEC. 331. REPURPOSING AND REUSE OF SURPLUS MILITARY FIREARMS.
(a) Army Transfers.
(1) REQUIRED TRANSFER.Not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, and subject to paragraphs (3) and (4), the Secretary of the Army shall transfer to Rock Island Arsenal all excess firearms, related spare parts and components, small arms ammunition, and ammunition components currently stored at Defense Distribution Depot, Anniston, Alabama, that are no longer actively issued for military service.
(2) REPURPOSING AND REUSE.The items specified for transfer under paragraph (1) shall be melted and repurposed for military use as determined by the Secretary of the Army, including
(A) the re-forging of new firearms or their components; and
(B) force protection barriers and security bollards.
I understand what might be the sentiment. It costs $200,000 a year to store them, and the metal could be used to construct things the army could actually use. My problem here is that the 1911s McCain has marked for destruction and repurpose are primarily the ones meant to go to the CMP.

Why this guy is allowed to keep the Republican label utterly baffles me.
Why not sell them?
Okay fine. I got mine.
‘Why not sell them?’
Exactly, and they would no doubt bring a collectors price..
That's no joke. OR... give them to soldiers. I don't know how many we are talking about. But 1911s would sell like hotcakes at a bit of a discount. They never go out of style and always seem run. It's a nice machine.
Me too. But the fact is most of these 1911s are beyond repair. Hell, the one I qualified on in 1981 was pretty much one level above junk. Much better is available on the civilian market.
L
Arizona voters had better get the heads out of their hindparts and Cantorize this weasel.
What would Trump do? Sell them make a profit....
Do you have any idea how much money the government could waste scrapping old guns for the more or less worthless metal, doing it in accordance with Mil Standards and all that?
The entire notion is bad, and this is not a positive feature, but an additional bug in the program.
I think we should make (If it’s not already) the heart of the issue the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
the CMP is our connection between the US Government and our constitutional right to own and bear arms. If that’s gone, then any semblance to “regulated militia” disappears with it. They talked about this in the 30s with the machine gun ban.
Come to think of it, let them destroy the CMP. Because officially Congress will have demonstrated dereliction of their constitutional responsibility to be able to “call into” the Militia. This will entirely break their end of the deal.
Imagine the court cases to take place after that.
The one I qualified on at Officers Advance course in 93 was so bad it literally rattled like a box of rocks.
“It costs $200,000 a year to store them,”
Sell 200 of them and it’s covered.
I think they are talking about 100,000 .45s, lots of Garands , M1917, M1903 rifles, quite a few .22 training rifles.
All to be destroyed for no logical reason, as a sacrifice to the gods of political correctness.
There is just a chance to get this changed in the reconciliation committee of the House and Senate.
This was put in the bill at the last minute by someone. I cannot be sure McCain did it, as RedState suggests.
What would Trump do????? Sell them make a profit.......
I’ve a better idea: I purchase (and other FReepers, of course) one or more on the cheap and I can swap out the old barrel for a new one and use it for practice and home defence. We are, after all, the militia our 2nd Amendment refers to and we must be well-trained.
This would help.
These M1911’s represent the US military in its great victories over history’s most formidable enemies in the epic struggles of the 20th century. These are among our most important historical relics and they were bought and paid for by American citizens at incredible personal cost and sacrifice. They should be in the hands of their rightful owners to remind Americans of what helped preserve our freedoms in those dark times. Each American should be able to see and touch these important artifacts for centuries to come.
After saying that 0bama was directly responsible for Orlando, he immediately backed-down, apologized, and said he misspoke.
Send 1/2 of them to Ukraine....
