The most holy season of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast from sunup to sundown, is met with varying levels of tolerance around the world.
In China, home of the Uighur (pronounced wee-gur) Muslim sect, fasting has been banned:
Party members, cadres, civil servants, students and minors must not fast for Ramadan and must not take part in religious activities, AFP quoted a notice posted on Thursday on the government website of central Xinjiangs Korla city as saying.
Meanwhile in France, once considered the European base of freedom, a waitress is assaulted on the Riviera for serving alcohol during the most holy season:
The men launched into a tirade, calling her a dirty whore and left the cafe in a hurry. A few seconds later, however, the venue's CCTV footage reportedly shows the two men turn round abruptly and one of them rush towards her and violently slap the waitress in the face, knocking her to the floor.
The waitress, from Tunisia, was quoted as saying:
I didnt think that in France, country of liberty, I would have been assaulted like that.
As Glen Reynolds pointed out, In that country, you wouldnt have been.

Great video by David Wood on Ramadan.

“most holy season” of rapes, neck slicings, shootings and murders.
Actually, nothing much happens in Ramadan period because most of the guys are seriously dehydrated by noon, and barely able to function as the afternoon wears on. If they stayed back in the old country....they’d be on ‘siesta-break’ from noon to sun-down. In Europe, it’s not possible.
My general opinion is in five to ten years...a fair number of these new guys in their forties will start to show kidney problems and be under some shorter lifespan.
When I went to college Ramadan was a cup of soup.
Hey, I seem to remember that - you could put an egg in it an consider it a well-rounded meal.
In some ways, being poor was fun. In no way is being a muslime fun.
