First, you want to pick a place that allows you to maintain a normal, mainstream life before life as we know it comes crashing down. A lot of us are of the mindset that something catastrophic is inevitable. I am becoming increasingly convinced that this is a sooner rather than a later probability, however it could conceivably still be years away. So in the meantime, you want to have reasonably convenient access to things like employment, education, cultural and extracurricular activities for your kids, modern medical facilities, shopping, and all the trappings of modern life.

Another consideration is proximity to nuclear power plants, proximity to military installations, distance from potential targets in a nuclear attack, and things of this nature. As to military installations, the concern is always martial law, confiscations, conscriptions and so on, all the FEMA camp nightmares we have envisioned and theorized about. I am not particularly concerned about nuclear war in the classic sense, and feel that EMP type weapons are a far more likely and devastating possibility, but terrorism is always a consideration and those guys are nuckin futs and very hard to anticipate, so being too close to potential targets detracts from an areas desirability.
So, where are the best places to be?
1. One of my favorite places is the Ozarks region of Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma
This region provides many areas that are about the right distance from cities, have a good water supply, strong rural and conservative traditions, agricultural activity in the form of farming and ranching, and a history of subsistence farming.

I've got it pretty much figured out. When the EMP/asteroid/whatever hits and the country is suddenly plunged into the Stone Age, I've got this list of prepper gear I've downloaded. I figure I'll just log into Cabelas, pull the trigger on that order, and wait until the UPS guy comes with everything I need in the van.
Then I'll eat him.
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
Church community, good farm land, ocean for seafood and water desalination and cut off from everywhere when the bridges blow.
The problem with that big green area in the East is that it’s too full of people. Now after a few years when the population thins then yeah. There’s simply no way the country will furnish enough wild game to support populations of that size. Think smaller populations in sparsely populated areas.
Thank you for the “ping” & the heads up
Not to mention the New Madrid Fault [major earthquake zone]
Laz is stuck in Atlanta. In other words he is so screwed.
I’d offer for him to come bug out with us if it wasn’t just SO SO SO SOOOO AWFUL out here.
You need to actively defend your entire communities. What good is protecting your house if your entire neighborhood of scaredy cat cuckasians too afraid to use their weapons has been taken over by hominids?
I am so screwed.
I’m planning to move dead center to the area within the next three years if my planning continues.
I think gulf side of Florida would be good. You can arm youself, you wouldn’t freeze if it happened during winter and you can heat up canned goods on the grill if the power goes out. Where I am you have to cross a bridge to get here. I’m sure they would be guarded in the event of civil unrest. At least that’s why I just retired here.
Reminds me of the Jimmy Durante’s do I go or do I stay
Jefferson. That’s pretty much the Cascades(#3) in the article.
STAY AWAY from NW Arkansas and NE Oklahoma. The libs have taken over the corridor from Fayetville to Bella Vista. Urban sprawl is reaching epidemic or cancer like proportions across the region.
The other factor in the Eastern Counties of NE Oklahoma is the huge percentage of people that are on welfare. They are looking for a handout every day and are not even remotelyl prepared for a disaster. They live day-to-day and will be the first out foraging if they can get up the energy for it. Oklahoma also has almost NO healthcare in these areas and the state budget is in the dumper for all manner of things.
There are 90 odd casinos in Oklahoma as well. They don’t exactly encourage centers of excellence or virtue.
Count me out. I'd rather wrestle zombies than be around Temperance League types.
Need an active spoofing campaign delivering misinformation, with the objective of preoccupying any urban refugee three days. Leads pointing to federal assistance goodies away from your location might suffice—a federal assistance rope-a-dope? Sufficient water and food deprivation should effectively check any mob’s capability to ransack the countryside.
The big problem with FL is that in the event of nuclear war the state is full of high value targets. That said, the prevailing winds would blow any fallout from west to east and extreme SW Fl might be a good place to live out the apocalypse.
Those maps are so old, obsolete, and exaggerated, they are laughable.
Oh...and welcome to FR. Whereabouts in FL are you? We have a place in Longboat Key, FL. ...need a Freeper meetup if you are in Sarasota. Good eats down there.
Thee USA is 50 countries with a weak Federal Government task with a few things like defense, border control and the money supply. When the collapse comes maybe we can go back to that original model.
