If the rest of the advice is that bad, best not to even read it.

Horrible advice

If you are hiking, if you stopped to do this you

A) Lost valuable daylight. Daylight you could have used to get out

B) Within 2 minutes of leaving the place you could easily lose you sense of direction and would need to find it again.

Also, it would probably just be easier learn the constellations and which ones point north (i.e the Big Dipper or Orion) than follow that dumb advice.

I keep walking until no one eats grits. At that point I figure I've made it north.

Better advice To Find Almost Good enough true North

With a wrist watch, line up the sun in the middle between the 12 and the little hand.

The 12 is pointing South

North is 180° the other way.

Use the 1 during Daylight savings

It has been said that the Southern Hemisphere lagged so far behind the Northen Hemisphere, in development, because in the Southern Hemisphere there is no “pole star”.

You have to be able to use the “Declination Diagram” on the map.

This is a place on the map where you decline the insurance coverage.

Ah. Orienteering. Took it for College credit 20-odd years ago.
I found the best thing to do if you get lost under an electric tower on top of a scrubby hill covered with brambles is to scream, REALLY loud, until someone else from the class or the instructor hears you and takes pity on your lost behind and hauls you to safety while tripping over themselves because they’re laughing so hard they cry themselves blind.

Then, never go Orienteering again.

First, I won’t get lost because I don’t hike.

Second, I don’t want to go North.

If there is land South of where you are, then you already are North.

Been a long time.but... A couple of sun shots by transit, a current solar ephemeris table, one accurate and precise time piece, trig tables, logarithmic tables, mathmatical muscle exercise and there you have it true north.

I found the two other methods even more useful.

Good catch. Thanks!
