The New York Daily News is a viciously left-wing newspaper that carries a special grudge against Donald Trump. It therefore offers its readers a complete guide to fleeing President Trump's America.
So how does a Trump foe make the big move to more progressive pastures in 2016? And of all the Trump-free countries, which is best for a soon-to-be-expat?
The Daily News rates five top prospects for emigration, beginning with Singapore:
As a bonus, Singapore boasts the No. 1 most efficient health care system in the world, as rated by Bloomberg. The U.S. ranks at No. 44, and could dip even lower with Trump at the helm. The billionaire has long blasted Obamacare and scoffed at government-run health care -- even though the system seems to be working out really well for Singapore.
That is, of course, the opposite of the truth, nothing unusual for the Daily News. Trump is an advocate of socialized medicine.
But here's the point: having recommended five countries to move to, the Daily News gets serious for a moment:
Unfortunately, you can't just pick up everything you own and move across the globe. You're going to need the right documents.
What?! You do? To move to countries other than the U.S.?
Work visas through a job are likely the most secure option but they're difficult to obtain. The long process starts with applying for a job in your wannabe home. In most countries, the employers must rule out locals who may be better-suited for the job before extending an offer to foreigners.
Really? Gosh, maybe that's a policy we should consider!
Most nations require a foreigner to work for several years before attempting to apply for permanent residency or citizenship. ... If you want to go one step further and become a citizen of another nation, get ready for a long road. That requires a lengthy legal process that starts with a temporary visa that turns into permanent resident status.
The irony, evidently, is lost on the Daily News.
Singapore have low taxes and have health savings accounts. So the place they want to flee to is a Capitalist ideal society
Classic. Freaking classic. Satire is impossible today.
Oh, and you people fleeing Trump, you’re gonna LOVE Singapore. lol
Isn’t it very expensive? I once read that 1 on 11 adults there is a millionaire.
Payment would be contingent on their renouncing their U.S. citizenship at the nearest U.S. Embassy and providing us a copy of their approved Certificate of Loss of Nationality from the State Department.
And forget about a joint, or chewing gum, or even being naked in our own house. Singapore is authoritarian.
Also forget a car, “Car buyers must pay for duties one-and-a-half times the vehicle’s market value, and bid for a Singaporean Certificate of Entitlement (COE), which allows the car to run on the road for a decade. The cost of the Singaporean certificate of entitlement alone would buy a Porsche Boxster in the United States.”
I got a crazy email several weeks ago. It was about getting legal/illegal passports, drivers licenses, etc. Should have saved it. Duh!
Just go to a Home Depot parking lot in any big city. Someone will hook you up.
They say that as if that is unique to only one viciously left-wing paper.
Actually, it’s one in six, not one in eleven.
I suggest an exchange program with Canada.
For every loon that wants to come up to our lefty country, headed up by a dreamy, starry-eyed buffoon, please accept one Canadian who wants to watch Trump blow up the Washington cartel, the evil press and politics as usual in America.
I’d take Trump any day of the week.
Keep those freaks away from Japan!
Not necessarily. I spent most of 2002 living out of the Ritz at about $130USD/night. Most things I bought cost a little less in Singapore Dollars than they would in USD (a $12USD pizza cost about $9SGD) and with the exchange rate I could pull $40SGD out of an ATM for about $25USD.
My buddy and I watched the Bucs beat up on the Raiders in the Superbowl in Sing. Kind of weird showing up at the bar at 04:30 Monday to watch the Superbowl. We had breakfast, quite a lot of microbrew, and "walked" out several hours later for about $40USD.
Now, owning a car is a different story. If you want to buy a car, you have to buy something called a "Certificate of Entitlement". This is basically the right to own a car for ten years, and costs roughly the same as the car itself. And there are not enough COEs for everyone. Fortunately, subways and taxis are pretty cheap, and quite prevelant.
Singapore’s health system works well because they don’t allow MILLIONS and MILLIONS of Diseased people in every year!!
I know because I lived there
Singapore charges ex-pats more for everything
You also have hard time moving there without a job.
Best argument yet for a President Trump. If all the Liberals leave, we will be great again.
Zimbabwe is the place they ought to be. Even the bums on the street are multimillionaires.
Not to mention these celebrities that want to flee. They are still US citizens and will still have to pay US taxes no matter where they live.
Let me get this straight, if you’re worried that a Trump administration will create a fascist crony-capitalist authoritarian state you’re supposed to flee to Singapore which already has a fascist crony-capitalist authoritarian government.
