Question, open floor plan, prep or no?

Or else; pros and cons of open floor plan?

Jamestown1630 : Does anyone have a ball-park idea of how long dry pet food can last if it’s vacuum-packed and stored in pest-proof containers?

Vacuumed sealed products will last for several years, provided it doesnt contain any meat oils.
Oils of any kind will turn rancid after a bit of time.
Best bet is to vacuum seal in mylar plastic , as it inhibits oxidation, and can last several years.

I meant to say several years more than just vacuumed seal.

Dry dog food may contain used cooking oil. That would be one thing to check for. I suppose that a person could find out the ingredients and go form there. I have some Freeze dried sausage patties that is around 50 years old that seems OK.

Might be good to store a small LED flashlight in or on the First Aid Kit so you can use the kit in the dark. Also, you won’t have to search for a light.

Carbon Monoxide can kill without warning. In a survival situation, you may be using open flames or burning charcoal in fairly enclosed spaces, which can be deadly. A Carbon Monoxide detector with a longlife battery would be really useful to prevent tragedy.

Our cats won’t starve as they constantly bring in all sort of critters. They let the dogs share.

TMSuchman - please add me to your list.

My two bits
Made my own dehydrated egg powder a few days ago. Hard boiled eggs, shelled, and sliced them. laid them out on the dehydrator overnight at 145 degrees. Next day popped them into the blender and boom - dehydrated egg powder. One Tbls = one egg.

Talk about timing, one of the cats just caught a bird so now the other cats and the dogs are excited. Not going to worry about the four legged members of the family. Rabbits, squirrels, birds, lizards, snakes, salamanders, etc.

“Do you or a member of your family require specialized meds? [In this house we do, so I have to figure out extra work arounds]”

Refill all your prescriptions 3 days early. Take the “extra” 3 doses and store them. In 12 months you have a 30 day supply.

Not bad, but if you use the va like we do, they so over prescribe the amount of meds, you can very easily stockpile that way. I have about a 3 year supply saved up for just my meds alone.

Ladysforest : Liquid fish antibiotics.
Forgot what they are labeled as, just remember that they are excellent quality.

the medications are made in the same labs that produce human medications , and are held to the same potency and purity standard.
They are just re-labeled, available to veterinarians , and generally dont require a prescription.

Do you depend on prescription medications?
What will you do if you are not able to get your drugs after a post-apocalyptic societal collapse?
"Survival Doc" discusses this important yet often neglected preparedness topic.

Good thought/s, but I have other plans in place which call for using a wood stove for heat & cooking, & having it vented properly. This is preplanning & don’t forget to get the flue checked & cleaned regularly [at least once a year for low use years & more frequently for years of a lot of use]

Can get them at the pet/fish stores also. Hubby used to have a giant tank, so glad that hobby ended! Nothing like finding a half dead crab crawling across the kitchen floor early in the morning.

In cases of an EMP a flashlight like that will not work. I keep a light stick in them for emg. cases & I have back up light sources stored in metal storage containers around the house & camper for the grid down situation that I am looking at. Also use wind up or shaker type, or solar powered spare lighting for these.
