According to "The Clarion-Ledger" four poachers have been caught in Newton County, Mississippi after police caught them shooting at a deer at night. Like many poachers, they shot at the deer from a vehicle, but this was not a typical case. These poachers allegedly shot at the deer from the cab of an 18-wheeler.
Officers were watching an area where they'd received complaints of head lighting of deer happening. They were surprised when the 18-wheeler truck showed up at 1:20 a.m. and someone shot at a deer out the window with a shotgun. Read the rest of the story here.

With a shotgun??? I don’t know much about guns, but I thought rifles were standard when hunting deer. Would a shotgun bring down a deer?

Buckshot or slugs will if you are close enough. I git a grouse once with bird shot that decapitated the poor guy (little close the upshot was there were very few pellets in the meat). Don't underestimate the humble 12 gage.

Would a shotgun bring down a deer? Sure. Most use slugs but it isn't called "buckshot" for nothing.

Would a shotgun bring down a deer?Maybe they call it "buckshot" for a reason?

Can't hunt deer with a rifle in NJ. Rifled slugs will do the job quite well.

Here in Illinois rifles are illegal. So folks use shotguns with rifled barrels and slugs. Highly effective on deer out to about 75 yards or so.

Firing a shotgun or deer rifle from the cab of a truck without protection will make your ears ring for a long time, if not forever.

Don't underestimate the humble 12 gage. I wouldn't call it humble. More like "the one gun you'll ever REALLY need."

I shot my first deer at nine with a 20 gauge slug in Louisiana side of Miss River “bar-pit” bottom land hardwood stand between the levee and old muddy
In deep woods especially if running beagles it’s quite common and effective

Exactly. The sound difference between shooting shotguns at an indoor range compared to outdoors is remarkable. Even with earplugs beneath electronic earmuffs.

You have a good point there. I’ve got a Remington 870 Super Magnum. You put in the long shells and its a canon. It’s pretty versaitle; except for those long distance shots. I just know if I took it deer hunting I’d see no deer closer than 200 yards.

Situations like that... use a KSG & load her up with 15 00 buckshot.

The thing I don’t get is why they call someone who kills a deer a “Poacher”. Deer are like rats — they are everywhere. These guys may have done something illegal and, uh, stupid (with alcohol involved, most likely) but poaching?
