One of the things I like about Cruz is he ran his Senate race and Presidential race so far without pandering on race. To me, it’s a testament to Cruz that Rubio didn’t know if he could speak Spanish and more so, assumed he didn’t cause he never heard it before.
The Washington Post transcript doesn’t translate it:
CRUZ: And on the question...
(CROSSTALK)
RUBIO: Well, first of all, I don’t know how he knows what I said on Univision because he doesn’t speak Spanish. And second of all, the other point that I would make...
CRUZ: (SPEAKING SPANISH).
RUBIO: Look, this is a disturbing pattern now, because for a number of weeks now, Ted Cruz has just been telling lies. He lied about Ben Carson in Iowa.
Nice try, Marco!
I thought Cruz should have waited until he wasn’t being talked over to respond to Rubio in Spanish. Maybe ask him a question in Spanish to force a response from Rubio. That would have made Rubio look like an idiot - carrying on a conversation in Spanish with someone who he just said doesn’t speak Spanish. When those words left Rubio’s mouth I immediately said to my wife - how would he know if he speaks Spanish? I thought Rubio was a lawyer. As a lawyer you don’t ask questions you don’t already know the answers to, and as a candidate you don’t make an accusation that you have no idea as to the truth of it, especially one that can be disproved as quickly as it was. There was no upside for Rubio to make his comment. If Cruz can’t speak Spanish so what? Trump should have jumped in at that point and said something like “if we don’t build THE WALL we will ALL be speaking Spanish very soon”.
Cuidado! Piso mojado!
Yo soy camarones!
I hate that Rubio said something about his vision of amnesty on Univision that differs from his English talking points. Its despicable, it feels like betrayal in plain light. Just like Yassir Arifat or that odious Luis Gutierrez. It should disqualify him from serving in the Senate let alone running for President.
the left hook was by a lightweight against a heavyweight.
We know will win that fight with a knockout blow
Are US Presidents now required to speak Spanish?
que poco inmigrante cubano, qué orejas tan grandes tienes!
Sounded like “is this the Spanish you want”...but I couldnt hear too well because I was laughing!
“Does anyone know what Cruz said to Rubio in Spanish? “
Actually, I thought Cruz was speaking Canadian, his native language.
I think it is sad that being able to speak Spanish should even be considered a plus to be President of an English speaking country
Recall Dubya speaking Spanish and the libs dunning him because his Spanish was ‘common’ or ‘slang’ dialect?
Never heard him speak it after that.
Honestly didn’t know Cruz spoke it, or care one way or the other.
The audience should have started chanting, “Jerry”, “Jerry”, “Jerry”. Then the candidates should have started throwing cake like on a Jerry Springer Show. ;-)
Them speaking Spanish while campaigning for President while me thinking in English makes me confidently feel that I know everything that I need to know about both of them.
