Uh, wouldn't that be loves (ending in an "s") instead of 'Jesus love me' sounding like a request?

While singing the song (and conveying the message ---that he does) I hear that you sang it as loves me.

"Jesus Loves Me" first appeared in William Bradbury's hymnal Golden Shower of S. S. [Sabbath School] Melodies. (New York: Ivison & Phinney, 1862). Bradbury had a hand in writing, co-writing and/or publishing many of the Civil War-era hymns and gospel songs that have stood the test of time, including "He Leadeth Me," "Near the Cross," and "My Latest Sun Is Sinking Fast."

I was amazed recently when my daughter told me she remembered my playing this on the piano and singing it. She was really young. She cited it as being influential. Oh my.
