Prepping has as much validity as does buying health or life insurance. Even the Bible has mention that Christians lay by and store. It never hurts to be prepared. It hurts when disaster strikes and one is not prepared. I was able to send a lot of help to my friends in South Mississippi after Katrina as much of the stores were out of everything necessary to survive during the first week after the storm.

Foraging is how unsupplied armies operate.

People who are too much of a p@@@y to try to take their country back, and at the same time are too damned stupid to be a moving target will duplicate what that response has garnered across thousands of years of history. Especially if they make themselves a strategic resource.

A book called “A Civil War Journal Of A Union Soldier” by P.C. Zick can be had pretty cheap. Take an unvarnished look at what supplying am army looks like.

Bottom line; be part of a military force, not some lone ranger or goofy commune. Even if you are old or disabled.

I’m not either. Too busy working.

But I did take time out to help a friend set up his fully self-sufficient ranch complete with cattle, chickens, a huge garden, water, power, and enough firepower to hold off a small army. (Many of his “friends” could not be bothered. Gee, guess who is invited and who isn’t.)

His logic is that if 1/3 of us die, that takes us back to the 1970s - not so bad. if 2/3 die, that takes us to 1900, and even 90% is 1860’s population. He is thinking 90% dead is no big deal because Abe Lincoln made it with that many people. He seems to be (1) oblivious to the side effects of so many deaths, and (2) oblivious to the possibility that he can influence whether he dies.

I’m prepped.

But, I’m going to fight first if it comes to a fight. I’m not going to hide in a hole to escape a fight.

And as we’ve personally witnessed, having a couple of months worth of food and household items stored means when you have a bout of unemployment, you can rely on these “savings” while conserving cash.

It is also invaluable when ice storms and other weather disasters make it impossible to get out.

And that the people who die don’t include the doctors, engineers, police, first responders that he wants to live to service him.

What if he's ready to use force to stop you?

Stealing is not a conservative value.

I'm pretty sure it's not a Godly value, either.

I remember reading something in a Book once that commanded us not to steal.

Don’t complain when someone comes and takes all of your stuff. What goes around, comes around.

A man or woman that will not save his or her family and his or her own life is not worthy of surviving if things turn bad. He or she will be but booty for the bad, their possessions swag and their children the innocent victims of their stupidity and craven cowardice.

I never thought of my parents as "preppers." However, every summer and fall, Mother would can hundreds of jars of the produce from our rather small farm. Corn, beans, tomatoes, etc. Jelly from our berry bushes. Apple sauce from the apples. In addition, we raised rabbits and chickens, but those weren't preserved. They went straight from being butchered to the kitchen.

We ate from all that canned food all winter. It wasn't a matter of preparing for disaster, it was simply how we lived.

I wouldn't call myself a hard-core prepper, and I don't live on a farm, but I did learn from my parents that having some supplies laid by means you can survive a setback of some kind.

Those who resemble the Walter Mitty character haven't changed much except for their BMIs increasing toward ever more disgusting frontiers of fat soup.

Great and funny classic short story, by the way. Free read, thanks to The New Yorker.

That is well worth mentioning and something that many should know about. Thank you. My parents also did gardening and canning. I did the same with my own young family during my early twenties.

“not some lone ranger”

If the ultimate goal is to just simply survive, a well stocked retreat in the middle of no where with contact with no one has better odds of surviving than a military force.

I’ve surfed a prepper forum off and on, reading some of their ideas. Many fall into that “goofy commune” thing you mentioned where they’d be so obvious and so ill prepared for a military style attack against them it’s laughable.

Preppers’ PING!!

When push comes to shove you be surprised what people who claim they don’t care will do to cling to life. One of the most dangerous groups that preppers will have to deal with are the anti-preppers, because they will not only covet what preppers have they will feel the need to punish preppers for having prepared and will feel morally justified in punishing preppers as in their twisted minds they will see the reason that the SHTF event occurred was because they dared prep for it. Their envy and indignation will be like that of leftist have for people who strikes out works hard and makes a good living or even gets well off and not sharing with them.
