The American definition of a conservative, and why that definition matters [Vanity]

What exactly is a conservative, in the historical American sense of that word?

A conservative is someone who understands the self-evident truth that our rights come from God, not from any man.

A conservative is someone who understands that, before anything else, legitimate human government exists to equally protect and defend our God-given, unalienable, individual rights, including the rights of those who are as yet unborn.

A conservative is someone who understands the simple difference between right and wrong.

A conservative is someone who understands the fundamental, crucial nature of the God-created, God-defined, God-instituted marital union of one man and one woman, and the natural family and posterity that can only spring from that union.

A conservative is someone who understands that the first part of the laws of nature and nature's God is the right of self-preservation, in other words, the right to possess and use whatever physical means are necessary to defend our lives, our liberty, and our property.

A conservative is someone who understands the absolute necessity of having a government which will defend our national sovereignty, our national borders, and our national security.

A conservative is someone who understands the necessity of preserving our republican form of constitutional self-government.

A conservative is someone who demands that our representatives in government understand and fulfill the sacred oath of office which they are constitutionally required to swear.

It's fairly simple really.

But let me leave you with a question tonight: How may of those who are in public office today, or who are running for public office in 2016, are actual conservatives? I would assert that there are few.

And until we change that, hope for America ebbs away.

One man's take on what constitutes conservatism, and why it matters.

I hope someone benefits from it.

Excellent.

American conservatism has little in common with “conservatism” of any other sort, because the foundational spirit and philosophy of the American experiment are unfortunately unique in this world. Inexplicably, tragically, unique.

Well, there was Newt Gingrich, but like Winston Churchill when WW2 was settled got kicked out of 10 Downing, once Congress was in the hands of conservatives for the first time in forty years, Newt was ushered out. We could sure
use him in the Speaker’s office today.

You bet.

I remember that the most loyal communists in the Soviet Union were called “conservatives.” In other words, they were the stalwarts for preserving Soviet communism.

Once again with this piece I’m trying to point people back to the fundamental basis of what made America great in the first place.

Because it is that basis, and that basis only, that provides any hope for saving America from destruction.

In my view, Mr. Gingrich failed to fulfill the fundamentals of conservatism.

Almost every word in the English language has been redefined by liberals to flatter themselves and slander everyone else.

Yeah.

But no matter how much they twist, the truth remains the truth.

Usually when we try to explain American conservatism, it can get pretty complex as we try to explain classical liberal political philosophy, free market economics, a judeo-christian world view, a constitutional legal framework, all rolled into some kind of coherent whole.

When it really all boils down to a proper relationship between God and man, and from that, between individual human beings. If you are in proper relationship it all flows naturally from that wellspring. If you are not, if you have cut yourself off from it, no formula can hope to work in its absence.

Freedom must rest upon a moral and spiritual foundation with God at the center. Lose that and you lose the whole game. Not everyone has to get it, but you need an earnest core who do get it to sustain the whole.

What is the best thing that you or I or anyone can do for our posterity? It is to help provide the spark of spiritual and political revival ... to point the people back to God, back to the gospel of Jesus Christ, back to the Bible, back to the truth, and back to the timeless core principles that made this great free republic great in the first place.

And I will add that, there is only one conservative on the Republican bench. That one man is neither of the front runners. We are in big trouble.

I think you just made a very important contribution. Eternal Vigilance has enumerated generally accepted conservative positions with which most of us would have few quibbles but your contribution is to go to the root of the matter.

In my view conservatism is the result of the relationship between God and man. Another contributor to this thread has observed that the left has stolen all the English vocabulary and distorted it and that applies very much to the venerable biblical concept of the fear of God. Today, any exhortation that man should fear God is resisted vehemently as tyranny but the true meaning of the biblical concept incorporates love as well as respect.

Significant for our discussion, this "fear" of God that properly positions man in a vertical relationship in which man is subordinate and, therefore, not God. Therein lies the difference between conservatism and liberalism: liberals would be God.

Original Sin, in my view, can be defined as disobedience to God in an attempt to become God, that is to have infinite knowledge, knowledge of good and evil, and presumably the political legitimacy, therefore, to act upon that knowledge.

Conservatism concedes the fallen nature of man, his limitations and his proclivities toward evil, and his need of redemption rather than his prerogative to rule. From this distinction flow all of the checks and balances, separation of powers and decency of the conservative movement. From this understanding comes the need for limited government.

If one is a God player he has no need of limited government rather he has need of levers of power, a place to stand upon, and an opportunity to transform the earth.

...”One man's take on what constitutes conservatism, and why it matters.
I hope someone benefits from it.”...

Excellent description. However, we will never be popular in the hedonistic, drug besotted, culture we are in until everything falls apart for real. Then, people will turn to Christianity and the conservatism it represents for comfort, hope and answers. The Dr. Carson attacks are the perfect example of the battle out there before anyone who speaks good over evil. It is heartening to me to see that the enemies of great accomplishment, goodness of heart and faithfulness to one’s belief are not getting this great man down. Make no mistake. The color of your skin does not matter to the evil people who preside over this country in the media, except when that color can be useful in their devilish games. It does not matter how much proof you might be able to give of your talent, your skill, your success, your help to your fellow man/woman, your integrity as witnessed by thousands of people over 50 years in the public eye..If you do not agree with their lust for power over you and everyone, they will try to destroy you and tarnish everything your spent your life building up for good. It is like good irritates them and they MUST destroy it. There must be NO example of good left in the world. I pray for Dr. Carson and the good men and Carly trying to get some truth and decency out there into our political process. As far as I know, not one of those running for the Presidency is a drug addict, which is one thing I think I see in some of our leaders and, definitely, some of the left wing media in our face today. That level of arrogance and willingness to do anything to achieve an end is just not natural in people who are not sociopathic narcissists. Drug Addiction. Is it the elephant in the room which is bringing us down and is not being talked about or investigated? I would love to know the answer to that question. We conservatives and the source of that conservatism will always be attacked by those who live through human lust alone without filters or checks. Fortunately, we have survived throughout history long enough to bring about as much of a utopia as any nation could ever hope for, considering our feet of clay. That utopia was The United States of America. I pray God will grant us peace, once again, through the good people we know we have before us. God speed, Dr. Carson..God speed!

Constitutional Christian Conservatism is the only true conservatism.

What exactly is a conservative

In the American political sense conservatism describes a citizen's respect and devotion to America's founding documents.

Good post. And, there is a huge difference between conservatism and American conservatism, like he states. Having lived in other countries, I’d say that no one else sees conservatism from a God-given point of view. To be honest, there is nothing quite the same as it is here. All the more reason to preserve it and understand it.

Thank You for posting the most eloquent summation of my exact thoughts and beliefs that I have ever read!

We often know what we believe but are incapable of putting those thoughts into words. You, Sir, have nailed the essence of American Conservatism.
