One man's take on what constitutes conservatism, and why it matters.

I hope someone benefits from it.

Excellent.

American conservatism has little in common with “conservatism” of any other sort, because the foundational spirit and philosophy of the American experiment are unfortunately unique in this world. Inexplicably, tragically, unique.

“How may of those who are in public office today, or who are running for public office in 2016, are actual conservatives?”

Well, there was Newt Gingrich, but like Winston Churchill when WW2 was settled got kicked out of 10 Downing, once Congress was in the hands of conservatives for the first time in forty years, Newt was ushered out. We could sure
use him in the Speaker’s office today.

Almost every word in the English language has been redefined by liberals to flatter themselves and slander everyone else.

And I will add that, there is only one conservative on the Republican bench. That one man is neither of the front runners. We are in big trouble.

...”One man's take on what constitutes conservatism, and why it matters.

Excellent description. However, we will never be popular in the hedonistic, drug besotted, culture we are in until everything falls apart for real. Then, people will turn to Christianity and the conservatism it represents for comfort, hope and answers. The Dr. Carson attacks are the perfect example of the battle out there before anyone who speaks good over evil. It is heartening to me to see that the enemies of great accomplishment, goodness of heart and faithfulness to one’s belief are not getting this great man down. Make no mistake. The color of your skin does not matter to the evil people who preside over this country in the media, except when that color can be useful in their devilish games. It does not matter how much proof you might be able to give of your talent, your skill, your success, your help to your fellow man/woman, your integrity as witnessed by thousands of people over 50 years in the public eye..If you do not agree with their lust for power over you and everyone, they will try to destroy you and tarnish everything your spent your life building up for good. It is like good irritates them and they MUST destroy it. There must be NO example of good left in the world. I pray for Dr. Carson and the good men and Carly trying to get some truth and decency out there into our political process. As far as I know, not one of those running for the Presidency is a drug addict, which is one thing I think I see in some of our leaders and, definitely, some of the left wing media in our face today. That level of arrogance and willingness to do anything to achieve an end is just not natural in people who are not sociopathic narcissists. Drug Addiction. Is it the elephant in the room which is bringing us down and is not being talked about or investigated? I would love to know the answer to that question. We conservatives and the source of that conservatism will always be attacked by those who live through human lust alone without filters or checks. Fortunately, we have survived throughout history long enough to bring about as much of a utopia as any nation could ever hope for, considering our feet of clay. That utopia was The United States of America. I pray God will grant us peace, once again, through the good people we know we have before us. God speed, Dr. Carson..God speed!

What exactly is a conservative

In the American political sense conservatism describes a citizen's respect and devotion to America's founding documents.

Good post. And, there is a huge difference between conservatism and American conservatism, like he states. Having lived in other countries, I’d say that no one else sees conservatism from a God-given point of view. To be honest, there is nothing quite the same as it is here. All the more reason to preserve it and understand it.

Thank You for posting the most eloquent summation of my exact thoughts and beliefs that I have ever read!

We often know what we believe but are incapable of putting those thoughts into words. You, Sir, have nailed the essence of American Conservatism.

Great post- a great expression of principles

It’s difficult when the definition relates to specific policies.

Such as when we conservatives want to cut the federal budget and layoff government workers, give power back to the states, bring the troops home, return to the gold standard...

I define a Conservative as an individual whose ideal is to Conserve, Protect and Defend our founding documents; the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, everything it means to be American is wrapped up therein.

We have strayed way to far from our duties and responsibilities, we should have already under the authority of the our founding documents DEPOSED this current tyrannical government we continue failing miserably.

I'm delighted to see what I've come to understand as "America's Principles" summarized very well in this post. And I'm all for conserving those principles. But I recall being taught as a schoolboy in the 1960s that the term "conservative" has an important meaning -- describing a presumption against change. Here's the pretty simple continuum of different perspectives on the desirability of change:

* Reactionary - wants major change back to how things were at some prior point

* Conservative - averse to change

* Liberal - very open to change

* Radical - wants major changes away from how things are and in a direction quite different than the reactionary wants

I want major changes. Some reactionary, some radical. I think we'd have been much better off as a nation if Jefferson's longest criticism of the King (re the imposition of slavery) had not been deleted from Declaration of Independence, and if the Constitution had not codified slavery.

A Conservative doesn’t want to sell out American industry with unFree Trade practices. A Conservative wants to fight back with protectionism and promote domestic competition. The founding father’s were all protectionists and tariffs are the most viable way of raising revenue and are preferable to income taxes.
