re Walmart: I never was into shopping there....I never found their food prices all that great.....they do carry a lot of mechandize but they're also huge stores, and you have to walk a lot to get to some things....and then those annoying checkouts....

the overall premise of the article is true..

people are looking for deals..

..once you start going to 2nd half stores or looking under "free" on craigslist, you know you can save money over shopping at the Walmart.

I think that everyone knows things are bad, even those on the government assistance programs. As for Walmart, other companies are cheaper if you know when to shop. Are Walmart competitors also suffering?

Their service is terrible in general. I used to buy regularly using their site to store or whatever they call it, no problems. Recently I ordered online to be delivered to the store, I checked out and the amount was deducted from my card. I did not get a confirmation email as I always do letting me know delivery date. I called customer service and they had no record of an order from me, yet my card was charged. I spent the better part of a week sorting that out, being transferred from one department of customer service to another. Finally one lady was able to fix the whole mess but it was crazy. I kept thinking of the saying “This is no way to run a railroad” that older people used to say.

Fred Meyers out west here are good stores to shop....

they have SALES and they always have a lot of checkers and then there's the do it yourself lines.

nothing is more irritating than to have to wait, wait, wait in line when you see a dozen open checkouts but no cashiers...like at Walmart.

Anybody out there, whether an “expert” or just someone you happen to know, that tells you that everything is just fine is either completely ignorant or they are purposely lying to you

I believe the opposite is true...

Seen it happen enough times now...Like right now, the stores in my area are booming...Parking lots filled with cars...A lot of fast food joints and small businesses have help wanted signs...

Someone will come on the tv and claim we are in a recession...People will get scared and quit buying...That's how they start a recession...

This October recession has been talked about since the Spring...No doubt in my mind it was planned...

Can run in a and run out and not have to hike a 20 acre floorspace and 40 acre parking lot?

And then you have to wait in line at a checkout for 30 minutes because Wal Mart is to cheap to hire enough cashiers...I avoid Wal Mart as much as possible...

Repeal Obamacare and many economic indicators will start to fix themselves...

The new part time job economy is taking its toll...

Obama care is the driving force behind almost every economic issue choking the country...

Fear not, the “Bern” will fix everything./ S

Shhhh. The blog is called “economic collapse.” The economy is collapsing! Tomorrow! Ahhhhhhh!!!!! Click on my blog!!!

(And it might collapse tomorrow, just like the rapture might be tomorrow, but incessant blogging about it doesn’t make it so - it just causes blog clicks).

I wonder if Winco is puttting a hurting on them too? All the items I used to get at Super Walmart, I now buy at Winco. I only hit a WM about once a month for items like pool chlorine, salt for the water softener, toothpaste, etc.

All grocery items, I now buy at Winco and Sprouts. Winco has a huge bulk food department too.

I am fed up with Walmart.

Slow, stupid cashiers.

Half empty produce department.

Over priced milk.

Low class, dangerous looking clientele.

Ridiculous meat prices.

There are better places to shop.

You've pretty well hit the nail on the head. If it's not stocked it can't be sold. Many mistakes have been made. The backwards Super Walmart with the food section on the right side entry. Everything is out of whack in those stores especially clothing. You can't tell where one section of it ends and another begins now. In all of them though stocking and on hand inventory stinks. They count too heavily on their computerized inventory system. If the computer shows 10 items on the shelf then no more is ordered. I've ran into this before on items. You ask a clerk when they will get a specific item in? They check the computer and say there's 10 on the shelf. I always say please show me where. They look and even after not seeing it can not seem to get past that point as the person that handles that is off and will be in next Tuesday.

Their food section years ago started out great. Lots of bargains and name brand items. Then came the Great Value Fiasco. Anyone remember? They pulled most name brands and tried stocking only Great Value items. They never recovered to the previous inventory. Frozen foods? I like Stauffers frozen foods. It is almost always freezer burnt especially the Spaghetti. The can goods I pass by completely now. Their meats? Ingles, Food City, and Krogers, in my state can beat almost all of Walmarts prices, they will also empty and bag the groceries and offer to help me out.

Walmart ended Layaway. That hurt them also as well as hurt lower income families which used it to avoid credit. It ended when Wally World Credit showed up.

Outdoor power equipment? Never, ever, buy there. Read the article "The man who said no to Walmart". Electronics? It has become a Big Screen TV and Cell Phone accessory department. As stupid as it sounds my local Walmart has both a cell phone store and cell phones in Electronics. BTW their Pre-Paid phone cards sometimes work sometimes don't due to a delay in processing the card. I'm also sick and tired of Hide and Go Seek of products. This is done for the sole purpose of making you walk around the blasted store in hopes you see something else to buy also.

Walmart Corp needs to stop micromanaging the stores to death and listen to the store managers who hear the customers complaints. Years ago when Sam's son ran it if you called Walmart Customer service or wrote a letter someone at Corp called or replied. I have gotten a call from a VP of Loss Prevention before. Now they have local "associates" contacting customers and they have no power to address any issues. Walmart is it's own worst enemy. In a poor economy Walmart should be OK. But the fools in Bentonville just can't figure out what Sam Walton understood to make it a success.

I was at a Dollar General with a hand basket of staples, the kid behind the counter was pricing some things in a rack. I stood there for a while. Realized he knew I was there. Cleared my throat, finally said, “You’re getting paid. I’m paying. Check me out or I’m asking for your manager.”
We’re getting like Soylent Green.

Has any one really looked at the cheap chineese crap that passes for clothing? It mostly looks like rags, color bleeds when washed and ruins your whole load of clothes, no regularity in sizing, colors are off season wise, who wears coral in winter, or for that matter in summer if that is the main color you carry. Women are picky about colors as they realize they can make you look bad.

Most of it is for 30 and younger, not much for seniors. Crazy color schemes that are ethnic, falls apart after 1 or 2 washing’s, crooked seams, badly sewed on buttons, shoes that are so cheaply made they don’t last 6 months.

Then there are the pre packaged meats that only GOD knows what the quality is, just like at McD’s. Cereal cost as much as it does at a grocery store, as does the basics of milk, butter, eggs or bread. No times on the pre cooked foods from the deli.

Shelves are not well stocked, to many racks on the floor and you can’t get a shopping cart around them with out knocking stuff off or over especially if you are in an electric cart, and only a couple of lines open.

Old Sam’s moto was buy American for the most part, since his death it’s buy cheap chineese crap.

I'm the last person who would pose as an expert on textiles but I have read that most clothing is now produced in other Southeast and South Asian countries. Unlikely the quality is any better but the wholesale cost is.

On the local news tonight they were talking about Halloween being the beginning of the holiday season and are forecasting a 3.7% increase in sales of Christmas items. They did break the spending estimates down by age and say the over 65 crowd has a lot more money to spend and will contribute the most to the sales increase.

Their next story was on the fact that people on Social Security not only will not be getting an increase next year but their insurance premiums will rise on January 1, some by as much as 60 percent.

Had just a little problem following the logic of all of this. Most people I know are cutting way back this Christmas. I’m not sure who the seniors are that have all this extra money to spend. Certainly not me or my friends.

Maybe Dollar General is better

Actually, at DG I can get a lot of household products, soaps, foods and other items made in the USA. The prices are constant, they have good choices that are well-stocked, and the smaller closer store makes it a more positive experience, shopping there.

WalMart made sense when shopping was a major part of people's lives and they'd spend hours there. Lifestyles have changed.

DG is fine if you just need a quick item or two and they have very limited groceries, no meat, deli, produce, clothing, hardware.
