McConnell Capitulates To Cruz On Immigration
IBD ^ | October 8, 2015 | Thomas McArdle

How many times have we been told that Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, running for the GOP presidential nomination, is an ineffective "wacko bird,"in Arizona Sen. John McCain's insulting words?

...it now looks like he's ended up being very effective in getting the Senate to do something about illegal alien violent criminals.

The first piece of legislation the U.S. Senate will take up after its October recess will be a measure that includes Cruz-backed Kate's Law, imposing a mandatory five years in prison for deported aliens who re-enter America illegally.

It's named after Kate Steinle, slain on the San Francisco pier July 1 allegedly by Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez, an illegal who had been deported five times.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who is on bad terms with Cruz, on Wednesday set in motion the process of having the bill bypass the Senate Judiciary Committee, where it was going to have trouble, and bring it straight to the Senate floor.

Kate's Law is incorporated into a bill by Sen. David Vitter, R-La., to punish sanctuary cities like San Francisco, which won't cooperate with federal authorities on immigration enforcement, by withholding some federal grants from them.

This comes after Cruz and Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., refused to agree to Kate's Law being watered down, as suggested by Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz. Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, promised it would be the "comeback vote" on the Senate floor after the break. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who is also running for president and who has been accused of backing amnesty for illegals, also supports the bill.

Cruz staged a filibuster against ObamaCare in 2013 against party leaders' wishes and has accused McConnell of dishonesty. But McConnell's capitulation proves that sticking to principle can sometimes overcome intraparty squabbling.

I see two possibilities since nothing in your statement is supportable by history or fact.

1: You are a leftist here to create the standard election run-up confusion that plagues FR every 2 years and results in ever more leftist Republicans being elected.

2: You are not very bright.

No other possibilities.

I’ve been told he’s an ineffective nothing quite a few times...right here on FR.

This is Trump’s baby. He kept the murder of Kate Steinle in the news. It proved what he has been saying about illegals in the oountry.

LOL, and here’s one of the chief Cruz haters right here...Ted’s name makes him hiss like a vampire.

I agree with other Freepers who think you’re a paid operative.

I guess I am tired of futility and frustration. The GOP has control of the Senate and does nothing. Reid declared the nuclear option to get their appointments thru. The Dems used all kinds of legislative tricks to get Obamacare thru including reconciliation so they only needed 50 votes.

If you cannot even get cloture to have a recorded vote, what's the point? The vast majority of the voters don't follow this inside baseball process stuff. When a tree falls in the forest, does it make a noise?

Maybe McTurtle is feeling the heat?

Or is he developing a conscience? Doubtful.

It’s either heat or some kind of financial incentive. He has no scruples.

Yes the GOP is in control and does nothing.

That's why they should be putting conservative bills like this one on the president's desk.

Make Obama veto bills that the American people want.

And then hammer that point home to the electorate.

This is one such bill.

Obama won’t sign it. President Trump will.

Hillary wouldn't sign it either. That needs to be made clear. It is ok if Obama vetoes it. Put it on campaign ads that the democrats are fine with allowing not only anyone to come in, but demonstrably violent people as well.

Will it pass or is this just another symbolic gesture?

As a stand alone bill, Kate's Law probably stood a good chance of passage. But...

Kate's Law is incorporated into a bill by Sen. David Vitter, R-La., to punish sanctuary cities like San Francisco, which won't cooperate with federal authorities on immigration enforcement, by withholding some federal grants from them.

...folded into a bill designed to punish sanctuary cities (i.e. Democrat cities), it is doomed to die of filibusteritis.

Thus, the GOP leadership works to kill some good bills by making them stand alone and kills others by incorporation.

Excellent. Make the Dims have a recorded vote on it. If it makes it pass filibuster, make Odumbo veto it. Then make it a campaign issue, hanging it around the Dims’ necks in every speech.

The Dems will just filibuster it because its tied to the sanctuary cities legislation.

’ The GOP has control of the Senate and does nothing.’

Untrue.

First thing the backstabbing leaders did was rein stigmata filibusters so the Dems can block legislation.

Where did you get the idea they do nothing?

It is one such bill that will probably never even receive a vote in the Senate.

Mitch, listen closely. This will not in any way help you wash the blood from your hands, your bloodied colleague’s hands nor help you in your attempting to keep your chair (that really ‘cushy’ chair in which the people’s money is stuffed. Sen. Ted, WTP pray that this once old Mitchie the turtle is not lying to you. We shall hold our breath until the act is given votes. Why should we believe Mitch?
