If I post incorrectly, please forgive me. I think it is the first one....
A new Go Pro showed up that wasn't ordered from a reputable outfit today.
It was addressed to my wife so I didn't open it on arrival. I don't go through other people's mail. Figured it was a typical purchase even though it wasn't from an outfit I would expect. It was a technology dealer and I do that buying.
A little while ago she brings in a box with a new Go Pro. She checked her CC and there was a charge from a couple of days ago. Everyone relevant has been contacted. It will be shipped back and no money lost. Numbers have been changed.
My best guess someone was hoping for a porch intercept while no one was home except for pickup call from Fedex. I happened to be because of some doctor's appointments.
I tried to initiate a password reset just to see but it never arrived so it looks like email wasn't compromised.
The vendor will turn the case over to some fraud unit they have. Odds are it was a one trick pony.
One other thing that may be related is that the package came UPS. A legit call from Fedex regarding a pickup happened to go to her cell.
I called FedEx and relayed some number scheme I'd never seen in FedEx. It was an internal request number. It's been cancelled.
My theories are (1) FedEx was being used by the criminal to orchestrate the pickup and take advantage of someone who wouldn't know better or (2) an honest mistake in FedEx.
I believe number 1 myself. Fedex in my experience has been really good and accurate. Sure mistakes happen though.
Figured people might want to know if this is some kind of scam going on elsewhere.
The perp probably used a disposable laptop and other bogus info so little to no chance of being caught.
Some cashier or someone else who saw/had access to your credit card info within the last few days.
Something similar happened to my wife. The culprit/s turned out to be an East Indian and her cohorts at a supermarket where my wife had made a purchase a few days before the bogus charges.
They were caught and prosecuted.
That scam has been going on for a long time. Too bad you didn’t have a video camera to record the deriver and his license plate number when he came up to intercept the package on your porch. Probably part of a ring. There are so many ways to intercept CC numbers these days so I’m nit going to even venture how they did it. If you ordered something from another company online recently a hacker could have gained access to the info tho.
It wouldn’t surprise me if it was local.
The bank’s fraud unit has been alerted. The vendor (FWIW) will investigate as well.
All it takes is a few seconds.
I rarely make card purchases any more. It’s not 100% solution since someone or some system can be compromised.
My credit union blocks a lot of things by default and sets limits. I have to call to change or request something out of the ordinary. I like it.
You should NEVER type in a password. Even keeping them in a text file and copying and pasting them when you need them is safer than typing them in.
No intercept.
I was home and got the mail a few minutes later. There are cameras and a DVR. A legit UPS dropoff, even saw the truck drive off. There was other stuff in the shipment.
FedEx supposedly tried to do a home pickup and left a tag but I didn’t see one anywhere. FedEx says it’s a legitimate inhouse pickup number and it’s cancelled.
A Go Pro 4K is on the list but a low priority. I like my Lumix just fine.
I reassured my spouse that data is bought/sold/stolen all the time. It can happen to anyone.
A former super who had never left the country got a call from his bank that his card was being fraudulently used to buy airline tickets at Heathrow.
I’m talking about the pickup AFTER the Fedex driver leaves the package
I do something similar to you in password management.
If someone tries to use my CC they are in for a surprise. For some reason that I have yet to get an answer for is every so often the ZIP code on file reverts to a different but same one despite changing it.
I know to use the alternate zip.
As far as Amazon goes, I generally get a gift card in whatever amount I plan to order. Works so far. Rarely use a CC for much else online.
OK, my misunderstanding.
Sorry about that.
FEDEX Ground “routes” are all sub-contracted to smaller regional delivery companies, in my state.
Unmarked vans, or surplus former FEDEX trucks are the usual delivery vehicles now for FEDEX ground, and few of the drivers are “regular” anymore. Even fewer speak English as their first language.
There has been no reduction in price to the shipper.
I don't ship via FEDEX anymore, unless it's via overnight. And even then, I don't ship to certain areas of the state via FEDEX.
FEDEX still retains direct employees for Overnight business to business services.
Problems in the shipping/freight industry have escalated exponentially in the past three to five years.
Scams are everywhere, and anything that was ever warehoused enroute, needs to be triple checked.
I don’t use FedEx much myself.
UPS as a rule had done better for me and I like my UPS Store box. Cheap security but they know me and sign for my stuff.
FedEx is a mess. At least coming from the east coast and in my local community. If I have a shipment coming FedEx, I know it will be lost entirely, mis-delivered, or they will claim they delivered it, but it doesn’t show up for several days. They need to fix their issues. I trust USPS much more than FedEx. And that is not saying a lot.
We have a different issue, we are Retired Military in 2014 we were FORCED by DOD to either use Military Base Dispensary or Express for our daily meds. We use the Base for Military secondary to Medicare. Problem is they put the meds in a plastic sack and shove it in your mail box UN PHOTO ID signed for, which means they are available to thieves and neighborhood kids. My dumb moderate US Rep tells me it will take an law from congress to change this stupidity. We are not talking about a couple hundred in drugs, more like between the 2 of us $4 K. Every 3 months. These are drugs the Military base doesn’t carry. And they are Name Brand so you know the full price is very expensive, and they will switch a Doctors DAW to a generic even when it is marked DO NOT SUB. VERY STUPID thing to do and a simple order to DOD to the Post office would fix it.
Meaning slap on the wrist, fine and probation. These people should start having to do some real time. Identity fraud is costing billions.
I’m assuming your bank cancelled the credit card that was used and issued you a new one.
I work in fraud detection for an online retailer. We see these sort of things everyday. Obviously, your credit card information has been compromised.
Someone knew your cc number and your address, also probably the ccv code. Most companies use AVS (address verification system) and they need the correct info to accept the order.
You’re probably right, Someone was going to pick up your package. There again, they know your address. When you do
place a regular order for an expensive item, always request signature required...that way the item will be received by you, a representative of you, or if you’re working, they’ll hold it at the UPS/FedEx facility and make you show ID when you pick it up.
Wow, ouch :/
It used to happen in my neck of the woods. I told the driver not to leave the merchandise if I’m not there face to face so he knows something ‘s up if someone tells him to leave it on the porch
“Even keeping them in a text file and copying and pasting them when you need them is safer than typing them in”
I wouldn’t recommend you do that. If you copy and paste your credit card number it is saved on your clipboard (I’m assuming you’re using Windows). Your clipboard is insecure and some webpages have been designed to capture your clipboard data, very likely because they know that people have this habit. Makes cc theft very easy.
I had no idea. Unreal. The brain-deadness of the typical politician never ceases to amaze me.
At times I sort of regret getting out at 4 but it was the early 90s and there weren’t exactly many option for me. Maybe it’s just as well I didn’t.
I UPS Store my stuff. I’ve told my wife she can address stuff to me and have things shipped there under my name.
Might do it one day.
