A team of marine archaeologists last week recovered a 9,000 pound cannon from the CSS Georgia, a Civil War ironside that has rested at the bottom of the Savannah River since 1864.
The Dahlgren rifled cannon was previously undiscovered by several high-tech, multibeam sonar surveys, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wrote in a press release.
The ship must be moved for a $700 million project to deepen the river to proceed.

Still pondering that phrase My guess is the bottom of a waterway that has been involved in international maritime traffic for 4 centuries has to be strewn with so much debris that pinpointing anything in particular is difficult.

At 9,000 lbs, I’m not surprised that they lost it.

That’s the weirdest looking cannon I have ever seen. It looks
more like a claw.

Of course, after we take down all of the Confederate monuments, we will be melting this cannon down as well. Taxpayers will be forced to pay to recover it. Taxpayers will be forced to pay to restore it..... and taxpayers will be forced to pay to take it down and destroy it.

Some great comments at the site. Sounds like a bunch of FReepers.
* Restore it for we may need it again
* Should be melted down and cast into free spinner rims for the disadvantaged.
* This is going to aggravate black insecurity.
* OMG! NO!! This must be destroyed right away! Someone is going to be offended because it’s a Rebel cannon.
* You can bet that if it is proposed to put it on display, there will be protests and demands that it be destroyed.

The comments about the hydrogen bomb are inaccurate. It was found about six months ago by some Canadian scuba divers on holiday and subsequently removed by navy engineers. 6 megatons apparently still in good enough shape to require a day or two of study before it could be moved.

Yeah, I was thinking about the same. It’s Confederate. Better run and hide from it.
