Even with its myriad of checks and balances the Constitution is not ultimately self-enforcing. Nothing is "self-enforcing". People have to do the enforcing.
As usual humans are the weak link.

Properly designed institutions do the enforcing.
It is why the Framers’ design is so complex. If freedom was to depend on a virtuous people, the Framers didn’t need to spend an entire hot summer designing the Constitution.

Nothing is "self-enforcing". People have to do the enforcing.Great point. A "self-enforcing" Constitution is about as realistic as a "self-enforcing" Iran in regards to the nuclear deal.
