Presidential Profiles Update
Conservative Review ^ | 23 August, 2015 | Robert Eno

Another week, another domination of the Republican race by Donald Trump. Unlike past weeks, where sheer personality was the driver of Trump’s position at the top of the pack, this week the attention was policy-driven. Trump released a bold plan to stop illegal immigration that was praised by conservative immigration leaders like Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL), and condemned by liberals and their allies in the media and so-called “conservative intelligentsia.” The issue has dominated the race all week, especially the issue of birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants born in the United States, aka “anchor babies.” There have been many myths about what the 14th Amendment does and doesn’t say on the issue of birthright citizenship. CR’s Daniel Horowitz outlined the myths and facts of fixing the birthright citizenship loophole earlier this week. Another look at the candidates' views and how they are evolving...or not. I think it always helps to see what is going on and to recall a candidate's previous views. If polls drive their change of view, one has to believe that at some point, let's say after they win the presidency, that they'll revert back to their normally-held views, or something close to them. After the pressure of the campaign is over. Let's not forget the Mitch McConnell comment that you tell the voters what they want to hear while you are campaigning, then do as you want when you are in office. Looking at this group, there are clearly several who are not bonfire conservatives. Hopefully, we can keep up a weekly review of these candidates so we can watch to see if their views evolve. We don't want to be lied to again.

I can absolutely believe Mitch McConnell said that, and it is a most useful comment in discussion, could you please reference the quote, I've never heard he said that, I've done a cursory search but could not find it.

Ted Cruz stated it during the 2014 campaign. Cruz was speaking at an outdoor barbecue or something, but I recall reading/listening to it on Right Scoop. I don’t know if they have it in their archives.
