Kids have three times too much homework, study finds; what's the cost?

(CNN)—Nothing quite stresses out students and parents about the beginning of the school year as the return to homework, which for many households means nightly battles centered around completing after-school assignments.

Now a new study may help explain some of that stress.

The study, published Wednesday in The American Journal of Family Therapy, found students in the early elementary school years are getting significantly more homework than is recommended by education leaders, in some cases nearly three times as much homework as is recommended.

The standard, endorsed by the National Education Association and the National Parent-Teacher Association, is the so-called "10-minute rule" -- 10 minutes per grade level per night. That translates into 10 minutes of homework in the first grade, 20 minutes in the second grade, all the way up to 120 minutes for senior year of high school. The NEA and the National PTA do not endorse homework for kindergarten.

Oh, the poor children are having to endure stress....boo-hoo.

Homework takes away from their precious TV time and staring down for hours at their smartphones.

Homework is Child Abuse! </lowinfovoter>

My 17 yr. old hasn’t brought home any homework since 5th grade.

Also don’t forget that they just released a study that we are to let the little darlings sleep in until 7:30 and not start school until 8:30.

Good on you!

I've known multiple home school families, none of which have had these horrible problems the public school children have.

Maybe it has something to do with discipline....just sayin..

Anything to do with child-rearing is going to have problems. It’s the human condition. However, to some extent you can choose which problems you’ll invite.

And what homework is assigned amounts to zero. Just brainwashing.

you are so correct with the discipline statement. I teach honors classes at a private HS and hardly ever give homework - because I bust their balls in class like you are supposed to do.

Yep, it interferes with their XBox time.

...students in the early elementary school years are getting significantly more homework than is recommended by education leaders...

So then, they are NOT being given too much homework...

Sounds like you’re a teacher, not a “facilitator”...keep up the good work.

I have seven children, and the amount of assigned homework in grades 1-4 has increased enormously over the time it took to have them.

The “new homework” is for me to teach them what the older ones learned in school.

I started school in 1955, and I had no homework until grade 7. In 7-9, I had 30-45 minutes, in 10-12 I had 60-90 minutes (I read fast).

The lack of homework until grade 7 did not handicap me in college or medical school, and I don’t really think anything was lost. Of course, in school, I had real classwork and was taught by real teachers, so that may have made a difference.

The wheat will always be separated from the chaff and the sheep from the goats.

Those who want to succeed (and their parents) will demand it.

Go ahead and tell your kids to take it easy, don’t bother to learn. There will always be those people who are ready to roll right over them.

My son started kindergarten last year. School hours were 8:00am-4:00pm When he took the bus, he had to be at the stop at 7:15 and didn't get dropped off until nearly 5:00pm. He had an hour's worth of homework each night.

Personally, I think this is too much for a kindergartner. But he excelled, and he loves school so there's that.

Really? When we got done walking the seven miles home from school (barefoot), uphill, in chin deep snow, we had to do chores before we did our 27 hours of homework.

Besides, it takes more than 10 minutes per grade to write that porn movie script for sex ed.

I recall that kindergarten was supposed to help "socialize" kids; help them with numbers, colors, maybe the alphabet.
Since they can't read or write, what homework assignments take up 5 hours a week?

How about the part of homework about how to sell the script and make a few bucks?

If you’re taking more than 10 minutes - period - to write a script for a porn movie, you’re doing it wrong.

You apparently haven’t had an average child in public school. They have gone from teaching the class to assigning homework instead. My children would often come home with homework over material not covered in class. It was really tough on them.
