I thought about asking a friend to borrow her male dog.
He is a big wooly bear but he is a real gentleman and calm.
I don’t know if she would go for it though.
Absolutely. I hear you.
I’ll take that under advisement.
I’m sorry for your loss.
Jackie is very emotional. I’m concerned about just that.
I’ve been walking her in new areas.
Unfortunately, she is older and has creaky hips.
I’ve I walk her too far she will be limpy for days.
Males tend to be a little more needy, but if you don’t mind that....
As someone else mentioned, you can try out a dog to see if the fit is right. Of course, it can take weeks or months for the adjustment for Jackie since she is traumatized.
An alpha male may make her feel more secure. Some of her energy will be used in trying to fit in with the new pack leader. Since she’s beta she should not feel threatened or jealous. She might be jealous of a puppy.
They should be fed separately. The alpha dog should get fed first, treats first, etc. to establish his role.
Hi there,
Stopped by your page. Gorgeous, loving & kind dogs you show (it’s all in the eyes :)
You are actually a great candidate, based on your description and situation, for a retired racing greyhound as a companion to your remaining girl.
Being pack animals with no preconceived notions of individual home life, they hold the fun of training a dog, but the qualities of an adult dog. A Google search will bring up a local placement group, if there is one. Most gals are personality profile specialists, knowing the dogs in their care well.
Definitely a male, the bigger the better (gentle giants). Oh, and black ..., because they are more difficult to place and you do seem to be partial :)
If not, the suggestion of an adult, neutered male, from your local humane society seems like the way to go. I just think asking your old girl to deal with a puppy is too much to ask from her.
The Fragile Circle....
Hugs to you and her in your loss ~
That sounds like an excellent idea. It’s worth a try.
I hadn’t thought about fostering.
First, I’m very sorry for your loss.
Similar thing happened with my beloved Kali last summer and our other dog who is a little persnickety. We ended up getting a new puppy within a couple of weeks, both for me and our other dog. It took a couple of months for Chance to accept the new one, but now they’re wonderful together. Chance is a female, i think they have the motherly instincts that take over.
I like your suggestions.
Unfortunately, I’m out in the country.
I only have 1 neighbor , most of the animals around moo.
We got a border collie pup and she probably extended the life of our old arthritic German shepherd by a couple of years
Picked a pup with a submissive personality so she is very mellow
Thanks trisham
Regardless the age of the new arrival, I would choose a playful female as opposed to sedentary. Sounds like Jackie enjoyed Solitaire's personality which was opposite of hers.
Always, Tasmanianred. :)
I haven’t had a male dog since I was a kid.
How are males needy?
I am partial to black dogs, the sleeker the better.
Thanks for the compliments and the suggestions.
She is pretty fond of her dog, she may not think it’s as good a suggestion as I do.
Hi Taz, hope you find the answer to your dilemma.
