This new poll finding, courtesy of CNN, is not all that surprising, but it is very illuminating of the demographic challenges the GOP faces right now: A big majority of Republicans believes that the government’s main focus on immigration should be not just on stopping the flow of illegal immigrants, but also on deporting those already here.
The poll asks:
What should be the main focus of the U.S. government in dealing with the issue of illegal immigration — developing a plan that would allow illegal immigrants who have jobs to become legal U.S. residents, or developing a plan for stopping the flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S. and for deporting those already here?
By 56-42, Americans support developing a plan to legalize undocumented immigrants over stopping their flow and deporting those already here. Independents agree by 58-39, and moderates by 59-40.
But Republicans favor stopping the flow of undocumenteds and deporting those already here by 63-34. So do conservatives, by 55-43. “Those already here,” of course, amount to some 11 million people.
Now, it’s certainly possible that GOP support for deportation is inflated somewhat by the inclusion of securing the border on that side of the question. But even when the question is framed a bit less starkly, as a recent Post/ABC News poll did, a majority of Republicans does not think the undocumented should be allowed to live and work here even if they pay a fine and meet other requirements. This should not obscure the fact that a substantial number of Republicans are, in fact, open to legalization; it’s just that more of them apparently aren’t.

I've been hearing this 11 million number for several years even though the increase is very evident. I wonder what the real number is?
Could not disagree more. A very good friend who is a roofer (2nd generation) is staying extremely busy right now. Back in 2005 we had a huge hurricane come through and ruin roofs all over our area. Those with insurance got good roofers to do the repairs. Those without (or just impatient) hired the cheap immigrant roofers. 10 years later, my friend is busy repairing all the 10 year old shoddy work.
Lol.... Sure. I live in Tornado alley. I'm not 5 miles from where the Tornado went through Moore Oklahoma. There isn't a roofing company in this town that doesn't use mexican laborers. That's not really even disputable.

Precisely. You don’t put on your shoes, then your socks over them. You don’t mop up the bathroom floor while the toilet is overflowing.
These are common sense things for most of us. But not for Congress.
We know what the exempt class wants: they want more “undocumented immigrants” after this huge wave is amnestied.
This is the explanation for the impasse. We say, turn off the water supply and we’ll fix the leak. Reasonable enough, right?
But their reply is, “Yes, the plumbing system is broken but the solution is to duct tape the supply pipe and call it good ...” for another twenty or thirty years while Mexico continues to use its rico neighbors to the north as a dumping ground for criminals and drugs.
Basta/Enough!
The federal government was made by the states to protect the states from invasion. If this government can’t govern, we’ll toss them out too, deport them with their pets.
I’m also a realtor. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I saw new construction or re-roofing where the laborers weren’t Mexican. Yeah, the business is owned by American entrepreneurs...
Put a $50 bounty on them, payable at any border crossing for alive, un-injured aliens and I35 southbound would be packed with rednecks in dually pickups pulling stock trailers....

I approve of the re-instatement of “Operation Wetback” from the Eisenhower years.
I would also support the cancellation of most H1B visas that take the food out of the mouths of American families and give it to foreign workers; at least until American engineers, scientists and technicians are off the unemployment rolls. When the unemployed American engineers and scientists are working again, they we could revisit the programs and re-institute it with severe limitations.
It would be so easy. Cut them off...no schools, no hospitals, no food stamps, no jobs...there will be a mass deportation happening on its own.

Best way to stop flow at the border is to threaten Mexico with a 10% surcharge on remittances.
Not only does meh-hee-co have elementary schools, they have ERs as well. The tough part is getting criminaliens to use them instead of the ones in the USA.

I don’t favor mass deportation, because it’s too expensive. I favor for those deported a permanent ban on re-entry and on any path to citizenship, with at least a five-year automatic prison sentence if apprehended in the country illegally after deportation, with deportation for all illegals who use government services (including schools), with strict enforcement of employment laws, with home countries paid to house their illegals in their much less expensive prisons for a couple years on a first offense so illegals have something to fear in breaking our laws, and with secure borders and searches for those who overstay entry visas.
With real enforcement and penalties that matter, most illegals will self-deport. Then I favor prison followed by universal deportation of the occasional illegals who come anyways.
Once we have secure borders, I favor a legal immigration system focused on bringing in immigrants who will benefit the American people, including not competing with long-term unemployed Americans. Congress should decide who can come, and how many, and we should be strict about limiting legal immigrants to those categories and numbers, with no illegals tolerated at all.
Deportations by the expletive train car load. Standing room only, and miles long.
Get them out and then let them apply to come back the right way.
Whatever the level, felony (1-5th degree), misdemeanor (1-4), etc., the jail time should be mandatory with no parole.
Fines are looked upon as a cost of doing business, but having served time, even just 30 days in the slammer - Oh dear, whatever will the people at the country club think? The Social Horror!
To make illegal Mexicans go home is not unreasonable. They almost always have a home to go back to in Mexico.
