Government Intervenes on behalf of the useless immigrant but never the useful

We are told to call, e-mail, or write to express our needs or concerns to our elected representatives since, after all, they are there to serve “we the people.” So, I had occasion recently to request assistance from one of our Congresspersons, an experience I would like to share with you.

Some months ago, I became aware of a fully accredited female medical doctor who was attempting to legally emigrate to the US. Of course, my recommendation was for her to fly into Mexico, walk across the border and be welcomed with all the usual goodies — food stamps, green card, work permit, earned income credits, medical care, education for dependent children, etc., etc. and thus immediately bypass all the obstacles placed in the path of those who attempt to come to this country legally.

But she wanted to do it the right way, since she didn’t want to do anything that might jeopardize her being able to obtain a US medical doctor’s certification. I won’t bore you with all the INS bureaucratic snafus that lengthened the process from weeks, to months, to years — literally. But she was finally permitted entry, and she is here.

Her skill as a physician is in such demand that she was able to get tentative employment, sight unseen, as a medical technician at three different clinics while her US accreditation as a fully certified MD is being processed. Only problem is that she does not have a work permit, and they can’t hire her without it. The INS estimates that it will be next October before it is issued. In the meantime, the good doctor is just sitting at home, watching TV.

So I contacted the office our U.S. House representative to see if he might be able to expedite...

Useful immigrants are less likely to be clients (hence reliable votes).

If you try and come here legally, as an educated, productive, contributing member of society, prepare yourself for a 5 to 10 year journey through Bureaucrat Hell.

I was advised that it is a violation of the Congressional Code of Ethics for a member of Congress to attempt to influence a Federal Agency! Frankly, I wasn’t aware that Congress even has a Code of Ethics. Haven’t heard much about it in recent years.

Congress has a code of ethics? Now that is the funniest thing I have heard all day!!!

Back when I was a pup, congress passed scores of special visa bills for people just like this. There was a young man from Taiwan in our community who loved America, took the citizenship exam year after year, but still came up a few points short. He was a nice kid, just mentally slow and not good at taking tests. He was also self-supporting as a handyman/custodian at one of the seedy hotels in town which also provided him room.

Our high school civics class became aware of the case through a newspaper article and took it upon ourselves to write our senators and congressman for a special relief bill which applied only to this one person.

In a few months, the bill was introduced and passed on voice vote along with similar cases throughout the country.

Not only did our local congressional delegation get to brag about their heroic deed in their next constituent newsletter, but it probably kept them occupied from doing real mischief elsewhere.

If such a code does exist or is enforced I can understand how Fed employees such as Kokinon(?) can be so brazen in their own actions.
