In Georgia, Scott Walker explains how the GOP can win anywhere
Atlanta Journal Constitution ^ | June 4, 2015 | kyle Wingfield

".................“I think that argument’s even truer now,” he said. “Almost all of the battleground states are led by Republican governors. … What our argument should be, when going into those states, is: Remember how things were messed up? You not only elected Rick Snyder (in Michigan), Rick Scott (Florida),Susana Martinez (New Mexico), but you re-elected them because they made things better.

“Imagine how much better if we could elect a reform-minded Republican like that to be president.”

That will require the GOP to win over voters who tend to back Democrats, such as those under age 25.

“I’ve got two sons in that category,” he said. “They’re much more libertarian than they are liberal. They don’t like ‘big’ anything: big unions, big government, big business for that matter. And so anything that makes it look like you’re making it easy for someone coming out of school to go out and live their life, that’s what my argument is. … The other side says it’s connected to you? Look: They want to keep permits, regulations, all these layers of government; that’s not good for you.”

Walker also cited his fights against seniority and tenure in the public sector as attractive to millennials, as well as another group Republicans must win over.

“Women are more likely at some point in their careers, particularly with families, to take some time off,” he said. “They come back into the workplace, even if they’re professionally of a higher merit, sometimes based on seniority or tenure restrictions they’re not able to compete at the same level as their peers who haven’t left the workplace. Those are all issues I think we can make compelling.”

Reining in an intrusive government has been compelling to voters in many states. It ought to resonate in a national election, too.

“You’ve got to act quickly,” he began. “You’ve got to use your honeymoon period. You’ve got to be bold and start working in the campaign and then really work in between the election date and the time that the legislative session starts … and put an agenda out there. To me, I believe in full-scale reforms, so (that means) a major transfer of power and money from the federal government to the states.

“So you push the obvious things, what’s in the House budget like (more state control over funding for) Medicaid, but I’d go beyond Medicaid and other social services. Transportation infrastructure funding. Environmental protection — all 50 states have an equivalent, why do we have all these duties … overwhelmingly at the EPA, why not push them back to the states? Workforce investment dollars. Even education, I think we’d be better-served if, instead of sending a dollar to Washington, we sent that dollar to our states and kept it in our schools. Those are really big, bold reforms that I think you could push early on and have, as we did with our reforms, it wasn’t a short-term fix, it was a long-term, structural reform. I think the same thing would be true there.”

A reform of work-force investment programs is one idea he said he pursued as governor with state money, instead of waiting for the federal government to act.

“I heard so many employers, particularly in manufacturing, say, you know, I’ve got five (open) welding positions, but if I could fill these, I’d have 10 more. Or I’d hear the same with coding and IT, or health care professionals, physicians assistants, nursing assistants, other positions like that. So what we did, we gave money to all 16 of our technical colleges … but we said we’re going to give you the money, not based on by dividing it by 16, or by students. We’re going to divide it by how you score on your application. So we said, here’s a pot of money. You show us how effective you are at identifying where there’s a wait list in high-demand areas, and how it meets the needs of employers within that region.”

The result, he said, was a focus on high-demand jobs such as diesel mechanics, welders and dental technicians: “We said, you show us where it meets a need out there, because we want to pay for performance. We want to know where we invest, this money’s going to go to put people on a career path where there’s actually a job waiting for them.”

While he’s on his “you’ve got to…” kick, he can help himself by not saying stupid unpopular things like he’d like to see the patriot act fully re-implemented in the future.

Who’s your candidate and what have they done in the last 5+ years?

I like Walker. That statement does nothing to help him. That’s just the truth.

“You’ve got to use your honeymoon period."

Honeymoon periods are a thing of the past. If Walker becomes president the Democrats will use every tool at their disposal to fight everything he proposes tooth and nail from day one. If Hillary becomes president then the Republicans will do the same.

Walker knows this well - very, very well.

So why is he kidding himself talking about a honeymoon period?

The Church of Scott Walker strikes again. Any perceived disagreement will get this treatment.

Executive experience, political courage/ability to win in a hostile environment, fiscal results, and the fact his lack of a college degree drives elites crazy.

That doesn't change the fact he still said something dumb. It's not quite a dealbreaker for me. I understand he wouldn't be able to do it without a complicit Congress. I don't see that happening. Nevertheless, it provides insight to his thinking. To me it's strike one.

The honeymoon isn't with the hard lefties or the media, it is the everyday person who doesn't follow politics closely and is willing to give the guy who won the election a fair shot to do his thing. Walker knows how to play this. He can make the opposition over pursue. The thing that comes to mind at the national level was the Dems politicizing the Wellstone funeral.

With such an interesting article, with so much information presented by Walker about governing, why bother commenting on me?

So Alinsky.

Edpc has posted to me before - seems to have a bug in his bonnet about me posting for Perry and now for Walker.

However, edpc doesn’t want to say who’s his choice.

btw, who are you rooting for?

Everyday people don't vote for cloture. Democrat and Republican senators do, and Walker won't have 60 votes.

Terrific. Fight for individual liberty, not government intrusiveness. We all win.

Ted Cruz

I don’t think I could muster an ounce of care for anyone else.

If this country doesn’t learn the lessons of Romney, Dole and McCain we are all toast.

Everytime I read something like this, I remember that we Conservatives are very, very lucky to have two top notch candidates (Walker and Cruz) who really “get it” and are firing on all cylinders this cycle.

Can’t remember the last time that happened. Possibly 2000 with Bush (or, more accurately, the potential he represented), but certainly 1980/84 with Reagan.

Yep. And the Republians will do the same to any Democrat elected president. Why pretend otherwise?
