Lincoln sought to deport freed slaves

The Great Emancipator was almost the Great Colonizer: Newly released documents show that to a greater degree than historians had previously known, President Lincoln laid the groundwork to ship freed slaves overseas to help prevent racial strife in the U.S.

Just after he issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, Lincoln authorized plans to pursue a freedmen’s settlement in present-day Belize and another in Guyana, both colonial possessions of Great Britain at the time, said Phillip W. Magness, one of the researchers who uncovered the new documents.

In light of Ferguson, Baltimore et al. and the never sated demands of "protected" classes, the historical debate seems all the more topical.

"The newly released documents underscore just how hot a topic colonization was in the 1800s, when prominent statesmen debated whether blacks and whites could ever live together in a functioning society."

There is a large segment of the black population who refuse to abide by laws written and enacted by whites, AND THIS INCLUDES ODUMBO, LYNCH, ETC.. The cops are damned if they enforce the law, and damned if they DON'T enforce the law. The blacks of Baltimore protest either way. How can harmony ever be achieved, given this exercise in futility? IT CAN'T!

Not historical news, I certainly knew about this. I know at least one study said Lincoln toyed with this idea but it was never realistic. Just grappling with a solution, and perhaps mollifying those who thought all these freed slaves would be a huge burden.
