TED CRUZ SURPRISES THE ESTABLISHMENT AGAIN
Power Line ^ | APRIL 9, 2015 | PAUL MIRENGOFF

Posted on 04/09/2015 9:33:46 AM PDT by kingattax

When Ted Cruz officially entered the presidential race a few weeks ago, I wrote that the pundit-oddsmakers were undervaluing his prospects for success. As a favorite of the GOP’s large conservative base, it seemed clear to me, as I later suggested in one of our podcasts, that if Cruz isn’t a Tier 1 candidate, he’s no worse than Tier 1A.

Now comes word that, in one week, super PACs backing Cruz have raised $31 million. This vaults him, as the Washington Post says, into the top tier of the money race. Indeed, according to Mark Halperin, there are no known cases in which an operation backing a White House hopeful has collected this much money in less than a week.

I think it also confirms Cruz’s status in the first tier of the actual race. Although Cruz appears to have raised plenty of money from wealthy donors, much of his success is down to small-dollar donations, according to the Post. This is the grass-roots speaking.

I’m keeping an open mind, though. Let’s see how Cruz does in debates and how he’s performing deep into the campaign season in head-to-head polls against (presumably) Hillary Clinton, compared to other GOP hopefuls.

Well, there is at least one poll which came out today (CNN?) which has Cruz beating Hillary in three of the key states needed to win an election.

While it is too early, in my opinion, to endorse any candidate; I will certainly avow that as of right now, I am clearly more impressed with Ted Cruz, both with his intellect & integrity, as well as his electability, than with any one else, in either party.

That does not mean 100% agreement on every issue; just that he appears more honest, more intelligent, more eloquent & more electable, than anyone else, even those only rumored to be interested, in the race.

What’s really going to shock the establishment if when the details on donors comes out in July that it’s discovered that most of the money comes from thousands and thousands of small donors and not just a few big ones.

My understanding is that there is no federal requirement to disclose the details of super-PAC donors.

I believe a previous report was that the campaign had collected about $2 million in direct contributions from individual donors within the first week or two.

I assume that would put Cruz’s total take at $35 million?

I guess there goes Jebbie Bush’s plan to clear the field by blowing everyone else out in the money game. Sorry, Jebbie; convert your dollars to pesos and move to your wife’s hometown. Run for office there; you should feel more at home—instead of importing more Mexicans to the U.S. you’ll already be surrounded by them.

A Harvard professor (Dershowitz I think) said Cruz was the best debater he had ever seen in the Law school. Dershowitz also said he was the best student of the Constitution he had seen in his career.

TED CRUZ - MORE THAN QUALIFIED TO BE POTUS - 2016
http://www.tedcruz.org/

Pretty impressive...
• Solicitor General of Texas from 2003 - May 2008, Cruz was the first Hispanic Solicitor General in Texas, the youngest Solicitor General in the entire country, not to mention the longest tenure in Texas history.
• Partner at the law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, where he led the firm’s U.S. Supreme Court and national appellate litigation practice.
• Cruz has authored 80+ SCOTUS briefs and presented 40+ oral arguments before The Court
• Cruz served as a law clerk to Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Cruz was the first Hispanic ever to clerk for a Chief Justice of the United States
• Described as a ‘superb’ constitutional lawyer, the man’s considerable skills and laser-like focus were on display for all when he took oily reptile Eric Holder by the neck and made him
answer the damn question.
• In the landmark case of District of Columbia v. Heller, Cruz assembled a coalition of 31 states in defense of the principle that the 2nd Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms.
• Cruz presented oral argument for the amici states in the companion case to Heller before the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
• In addition to his victory in Heller, Cruz has successfully defended the Ten Commandments monument on the Texas State Capitol grounds, the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools and the majority of the 2003 Texas redistricting plan. Cruz also successfully defended, in Medellin v. Texas, the State of Texas against an attempt by the International Court of Justice to re-open the criminal convictions of 51 murderers on death row throughout the United States.
• Director of the Office of Policy Planning at the Federal Trade Commission
• Domestic Policy Advisor to U.S. President George W. Bush on the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign.
• Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, where he taught U.S. Supreme Court litigation
• Ted Cruz is currently junior US Senator from Texas. In order to win the 2012 Republican nomination for the Senate seat vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison, Cruz had to defeat Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst -heavily favored/backed by the DC old-guard GOP- in the Republican primary runoff. In the event, TEA Party favorite Cruz crushed Dewhurst, 57-43%...
he then beat Democrat Paul Sadler in the general election by a similar margin, 56-41. Cruz is also endorsed by the Tea Party Movement and the Republican Liberty Caucus.
• AWARDS: “America’s Leading Lawyers for Business,” Chambers USA (2009 & 2010) “50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America,” National Law Journal (2008) “25 Greatest Texas Lawyers of the Past Quarter Century,” Texas Lawyer (2010) “20 Young Hispanic Americans on the Rise,” Newsweek (1999) Traphagen Distinguished Alumnus, Harvard Law School
• On November 14, 2012, Cruz was appointed vice-chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. He is now spearheading efforts in the Senate to have root-and-branch...
Godspeed, Senator Cruz- I’m all in.

Make that $4 million (?) previously reported plus the $31 million recently reported = $35 million?

The establishment in both parties are reading their tea leaves wrong. A huge number of Americans have had enough of one party destroying the economic, social, and moral fabric of this country while the other party stands by and does nothing or offers feeble resistance to it. That’s why you see Ted Cruz rising in the national polls while Hillary continues her free all. It’s early but the proof is out there that a growing number of Americans seek profound change in its governance.

your understanding is incorrect

Actually, I think his understanding is correct, at least in part.

Since the donations are not being made to the Cruz campaign, Cruz cannot provide the donor information to the FEC. And if the donors to the super-PAC are 504(c)4 entities, they are legally able to shield the identity of the donors. So while the identity of the 504(c)4 group is known, the identity of the actual donors is not.
