What a week! Suicidal airplanes, exploding buildings, our Mideast policy revealed to be as venal and addled as we feared. We have not seen such a synthesis of incompetence and malfeasance since well, ever. Even Jimmy Carter looks competent and wise by comparison. At least back then it was still clear which end zone we were trying to protect.
Now that the Arab Spring is nothing more than a vague dream fragment the Middle East appears on the brink of implosion. The thin memory of that verdant vernal equinox is about to be eclipsed by nuclear winter. And havent we all had enough of winter by now?
Thats why Im initiating the first of my Last Friday of the Month Great Escapes. Come with me, if you will, on a nostalgic trip back to mid-century America - where all the women were schtrong, all the men good looking, and all the children above average.
I give you Gene Kelly, tap dancing on roller skates! Id like to see Pharrell Williams and his stupid hat do this:
I Like Myself (It's Always Fair Weather ) - Gene Kelly h/t DVR
And dont worry, we will find a way to roll along. Enjoy your weekend.

I like it. I miss the good old’ days. Too bad we didn’t realize how good they were and do more to hang on to them.
Rahm Emanuel floats naming Chicago airport after Barack Obama

Chicagos Mayor Rahm Emanuel, currently fighting for his political life in a heated run-off campaign, floated the idea Wednesday of naming an airport after the Windy Citys favorite son: President Barack Obama.
When asked at a candidate forum at Chicago State University why he was no longer supporting his own proposal to name two high schools after Obama and influential religious and community leader Arthur Brazier, Emanuel said that he was still looking for ways to acknowledge people who have done significant things.
We have an airport, two of them, you know, Midway Airport, OHare Airport, Emanuel said. [Obama and Brazier] are people who have been transformative in the city of Chicago. But we have airports named after battleships.
