Robert Duvall sat down with The Daily Beast at the recent South-by-Southwest (SXSW) festival to talk about his new movie, Wild Horses.
But the enigmatic actor also offered up some strong advice to the Republican Party, which well get to in a bit.
According to the publication, Duvall has been a longtime supporter of the GOP:
He was personally invited to George W. Bushs presidential inauguration in 2001, worked the floorand narrated the videosfor the 2008 Republican National Convention, and publicly endorsed Mitt Romney in 2012.
But last year, Duvall told The Daily Beast that hes leaning independent because the Republican Party today is, in his view, a mess. So, where has the Republican Party gone wrong, according to Duvall? He told the Daily Beast that the GOPs stance on birth control and religion is a problem:
Its unfortunate. Women cant be independent. Also, religion and politics should be completely separate. Completely separate. For some reason, Duvall also pointed out the difference, in his opinion, between politics and religion in America and Italy:
When we took The Apostle to the Rome Film Festival, I said, Here, you have one church and a ton of political parties. In America, we have two political parties and all kinds of churches. Its strange. Whatever strangeness Mr. Duvall sees in Americas relationship with politics and religion, is he right in his admonishment to the GOP? Moreover, would the Republicans be wise to heed his call, or not?
So he is getting positive press because he is saying the GOP is not enough like democrats.
Tell him not to worry about it. According to all the experts, the reason the Repubs have been losing the WH is because conservatives and especially the religious right have not been voting.
“the GOPs stance on birth control and religion is a problem”
As far as I know, the GOP has no stance on birth control OR religion, so what the heck is he talking about?
I agree 100%.
Absolutely love Duvall’s body of work. Do not give a damn what his political opinion is.
No, the problem is the state messing with religion where it has no business. But religion and godly values in the state? That’s a good thing as our carved stone monuments in D.C give testimony. Wish people could get this right.
Sounds like somebody is looking for more(hollywood)work.
Flame away. Then ask your selves why America elects a communist.
Twice.
The DemocRATS have their own church, Leftist Environmentalism, complete with sacraments - carbon offsets and abortion.
He wants women to be able to murder their babies without guilt.
Troo dat.
The Republican Party has long taken a stand in favor of LIFE, and that includes the life of the unborn.
If a voter equates abortion with "birth control" then we are not going to get, nor do we want, that voter's vote.
Wow, and this appeared in The Daily Beast? Hoodathunkit?

IOW, he’s completely full of ****.
we will keep having Obama’s in the White House because old men like Duvall are fixated on abortion.
I would like to hear from you what the GOP’s stance is on birth control and religion.
I would also like to know your theory on why our last born-again Presidential candidate WON.
Twice.
Charlie Don't Surf !!
..and that includes the lying Rolling Stone article.
Leave it to hell alone!
One heck of an actor!
That’s what it sounds like. Oh well, he’s been making lackluster movies for years, so I won’t really miss watching them.
Obviously, Mr. Duvall’s better days are behind him. He is entitled to his opinion, but no more so than any non-celebrity voter.
