Marquette University has begun the process to fire a tenured professor after he publicly said that students have the right to oppose gay marriage while in class, while also naming the professor who tried to ban it.
In a letter to Dr. John McAdams, Marquette informed the professor that the "University is commencing the process to revoke your tenure and to dismiss you from the faculty.
Marquette is taking this action after Dr. McAdams became aware that another professor, Cheryl Abbate, had banned a student from opposing gay marriage in her classroom. Parts of the incident were recorded secretly by the student.
Abbate equated being against gay marriage to being "racist" and "sexist." When the student told her that he had a right to voice his opinion because of the first amendment, he was told "you don't have a right in this class to make homophobic comments" and to drop the class.
Here is part of the recorded conversation transcribed:
The student ended up dropping the class.
Dr. McAdams then criticized this decision online, believing that freedom of speech should not be squashed, even if an opinion disagrees with that of a teacher.
In response, Marquette suspended Dr. McAdams, and has now moved to fire him.

Staliinist crap.
Sue them for everything they got.
Sounds like a great chance for agood lawyer to take this university to the cleaners.
Please, oh please.
Make them eat Obamastuff and die naked while listening to rap.
More of the intolerance of the Left who obviously don’t believe in free speech. Disgusting.
Marquette obviously only honors academic freedom among students and faculty if it does not conflict with their politically correct views. Fascism rules in much of academia.
Free Speech for me, but not for thee.
What’s really sad is that this is supposed to be a Catholic university. So speaking out in favor of Catholic church doctrine (traditional marriage) is apparently forbidden there.
“We can’t burn the heretic, but we can fire him!”
So, I take it that Marquette is ready to repay the costs of its founding to the Roman Catholic Church which basically has the same viewpoints of this dissenting Professor?
Here in NJ Catholic schools are going the way of the dodo; once they are indistinguishable from public institutions except for the higher price, who would use them? They are becoming what they had been in Catholic Europe’s far-flung colonies: A place to educate a fraction of the population, a wealthy elite.
BJ Clinton attended a Catholic college; enough said.
Calling Archbishop Jerome Listecki
Archbishop, would you please pick up the phone. Intervention is needed at your university in your archdiocese.
Leftists hate freedom. Always have always will.
Some of us remember when American educators taught students to think for themselves--delighted in originality of thought--encouraged debate and diversity.
Today they demand conformity--scorn diverse ideas--hold freedom of speech, of thought, of belief and the free exchange of ideas in contempt.
Post of the millennium.
And besides it’s supposed to be a Catholic college. Hello, Catholics oppose gay marriage. I bet the female prof is another minority to boot.
Marquette has harbored pro-abortion ex-priest Daniel Maguire for decades. A co-founder of Catholics for a Free Choice.
The Jesuits are the most pro-abortion religious order in the Church. Their colleges have consistently been the most overtly pro-abortion.
Several have already hit on the correct response. The professor should retain a legal *team*, and file a truly enormous lawsuit against the university, definitely before they fire him.
To start with, this will throw a monkey wrench into their plan to fire him. Their lawyers will insist they put the firing on hold, because any actions they take against him will be regarded legally as retaliation, and thus could double or triple his punitive reward.
And the student who was the focus of this should be brought in as well as a party to the suit, to prevent the school from taking any adverse actions against him as well as to maybe pay off his student loans with the reward.
It is an interesting time in Catholic universities and colleges.
A casual campus visitor to Georgetown, Notre Dame, Boston College, Marquette and others cannot help but notice the overwhelming support and advocacy for homosexuals and homosexualism (the postulate of a fixed “sexual orientation”). Signs, banners, speakers, tables soliciting donations - all over the place.
It really is quite remarkable. Catholics believe that the Pope and councils are protected against teaching error, and so far, they have not (although CCC 2358 skates pretty close to the line in this regard).
But on the front lines, so to speak, Catholic higher education is becoming more gay by the second.
tolerance apparently doesn’t apply to those that question liberal doctrine
