Democrats should welcome a Scott Walker-led GOP ticket [will break back of conservative base]
The Washington Post ^ | February 6, 2015 | James Downie

Posted on 02/06/2015 8:40:59 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

"... Among candidates that the conservative base consider “real” conservatives(as opposed to Jeb Bush and Chris Christie, apostates on various key issues),Walker is the most likely to win the Republican nomination. And Democrats should hope he gets the nod.

The fundamentals suggest that the 2016 election will be extremely competitive. With economic growth picking up and President Obama’s approval rating trending back toward 50 percent,Democrats have a real chance now to capture a third term in the White House, historically a tough ask. But under all but the best conditions,Hillary Clinton will need every advantage she can get. As John Sides and Lynn Vavreck show in their must-read 2012 postmortem “The Gamble,”polls suggest that Obama, not Mitt Romney, was the candidate less ideologically similar to the average voter, and Obama’s liberalism may have cost him several percentage points with independent voters. It must be noted that truly independent voters(not voters who say they are independent but almost always vote for one of the parties)make up a small percentage of the electorate. But in what the fundamentals suggest will be a very close race, running a more moderate Democrat in Clinton against a stridently more conservative Republican in Walker could provide that 1 percent difference.

Furthermore, a losing Walker-led ticket would provide the best proof for the GOP base that the “our guy would have won if he was more conservative” argument is a myth. As much as outsiders rolled their eyes at post-election claims that Romney and John McCain “weren’t conservative,”it’s certainly true that they were on the more moderate side of their respective primary fields. It’d be impossible to claim that with Walker(though some will no doubt try).Maybe, just maybe, that will be enough to stop or at least stall the Republican Party’s sprint to the right and finally bring the GOP back to the bargaining table.

The liberals will always tell you who they want to run against.

First letter of “establishment” or “elite”.

Amen to the message to the Walkerites

This Washington Post writer proves even a stopped clock is right two times a day! He is correct in the end result, but for the wrong reasons.

The writer is correct in that Walker will lose to Hillary, but not because he is too conservative (if only that were the case), but rather because he supports amnesty, he is inextricably tied to the GOPe, and he cannot deliver Wisconsin (not to mention Iowa, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio) against Hilary. Walker’s coattails are very short (note it was Walker voters that delivered the margin of victory to Obama in Wisconsin in 2012).

We need a strong, unapologetic warrior for Conservatism in the upcoming race. We need someone who will not shirk or be mildmannered. We need someone (unlike Romney and McCain) who will not be afraid to get into Hillary’s face or to stick it to Obama.

Winning in 2016 will require motivating the millions of disaffected Conservatives who have been sitting out elections.

Conservatives would have to be crazy to support a Walker presidential candidacy.

The same one who gave YOU the power to lash out with a comment that brings up has been potentials that don’t have a chance.

The real gist of it is that what I said pi$$ed you off WRT Walker and his obvious flaw on amnesty, illegals, enforcing current laws, et al. Your reaction is to bring up Tancredo/Buchannan....good job there.

So far I am luke warm on Walker. He’s going to have to show me the money before I get on board. I’m more partial to Ted Cruz and I know this isn’t popular or Rick Perry.

So if Walker does a flip and becomes ANTI amnesty, you would believe him?

Downie’s an idiot.

Wrong in projecting a conservative will be easily beaten. If the Repubs ever do “lose” their pick for prez (Jeb, Christie, etc.) and a true conservative is the eventual nominee one thing will happen that did not happen in 2008 and 2012.

And that is MILLIONS more conservatives will show up on Election Day and will VOTE FOR the conservative.

Result? The conservative wins.

Self delusion seems to be all that I see on the news anymore....It is rather amazing..

If he committed and did it NOW, yes, I would - honestly. I want the polls, the jockeying and the maneuvering out of it and I WANT to know what their true feelings are on the matter - NOW. Why is this so hard for Walkerites to understand?

Walker’s coattails are very short (note it was Walker voters that delivered the margin of victory to Obama in Wisconsin in 2012).

I was told here on FR just a few days ago that it was both Walker AND the WI legislature who conspired to delver WI to Obama in 2012.

Do you have any exculpatory information excusing the legislature?

Walker has strong economic ties to Mexico. He would sell us out.

This is funny considering Democrats and their union machines in a Democrat majority state threw the kitchen sink at Walker 3 times. And he kicked their butts all 3 times.

OK, so you want someone who unambiguously meets your standard for amnesty. Name the candidate. Cruz has not always been solid on this either, and falls short of the Buchanan/Tancredo standard. They are losers in part because this was pretty much their only issue (for Buchanan in 2000 mainly).

Thanks... but I don’t really know that personally....he’s a governor who’s had success against state unions, bureaucrats and national DNC incursion trying to oust him.

That doesn’t translate to anything really meaningful to me on a national level when my primary concern (besides keeping my grand daughters off that brass pole) is to NOT have them learn Spanish to survive in this country.

Stopping this invasion of Hispanic illegals into this country and to not let those illegals already here remain under legal pretexts is my prime directive. I will NOT support a candidate who equivocates or waffles on this. Not for one second.

You really want to stack your boy up against Walker then. Bad choice. Stick with who’s there instead of bringing up has-beens.

HOW about a petition urging Jeb Bush NOT to run and give it to his donors too.

His support is beltway and NYC based not reality based.
