Marijuana destroys Families

My daughter will turn 19 this month. She is our fifth child. She has also been the most worrying to us as she started using drugs a long time ago. She said she first smoked weed at age 12. Since then she has gone on the try many other drugs to include meth, cocaine, pills and LSD and a few others I can’t name. Last year she was in intensive care for 8 days. She has also been in jail about seven or eight times and gone through rehab twice. She is currently living with her mother and I at home but things are getting very tense. She broke up with her boyfriend and says that the stress of breakup makes her want to go get high and chill with her friends. Her friends are not true friends as they are also on drugs. Every time she hangs out with them she stays wasted for a couple days and I had to take her to the ER twice due to overdose on alcohol. Add to all this she has been beat up several times and raped twice that she has admitted to. When you add into this chaos the fact that my wife suffers from a mental illness which is made worse with stress it gets even more chaotic. Now I am at the point where I will soon have to make the choice of allowing my wife to be hospitalized because of her mental illness or I put my daughter out because of the strife she is causing. We’ve offered her all the help in the world and she continues to go on binges and tell us that what we offer won’t help. The last time she got wasted she told us all to “Go f***” ourselves. That night she left the house and was brought home by the police when they found her walking down the highway. As a parent I love my daughter endlessly. But I don’t see how (or why) I should continue to allow her to destroy the rest of the family. But at the same time I feel guilty for what I am considering. We can’t force her into treatment as she is an “adult” and I’m afraid that she will either end up in prison or dead. All this started I believe because she started smoking weed. The weed lowered her inhibitions and resistance and she started doing other drugs. So I truly believe that weed is a gateway drug and should never be legalized. If someone needs it for medicinal purposes they should have to go to a pharmacy for it just like we do with other prescription medications. It hurts me to do it, but I think I may be evicting her from the house today when I get home from work.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I would strongly recommend that you *NOT* throw her out before doing a few things such as:
- consulting with an attorney
- reporting to the police that she threatened you and her mother
- changing the locks

If there’s a way to do it, have a restraining order served *after* changing the locks.

You need to protect yourself from a young woman who used to be your daughter.

I will pray for you both, and if I may give one piece of advice. Tell her that only she and God can beat her demon, and the way to ask for God’s help is to pray to Him and ask Him for His help. I am not even joking about that at all. On her darkest day, she will see His light, and He will lead her back to the path and out of the woods. I apologize for the length of my post, I’ll stop it now.

I hope everyone here reads every word of chris37's post.

Chris, amen to every word, from a fellow traveler in "addiction." The cure is inside. Intervention of an outside source is in vain.

And for the Love of Pete, the kid is only NINETEEN!!

Consigning her to failure and soiledness this soon is ... sad. Pray for her and love her the best you can, whether it's propping her up a bit or letting her go to flail and learn, but always with love. That's the most important thing.

And here you are. The guy that says drug addiction won't grow and never bothers to notice it is growing.

Without active efforts to keep it down, drug addiction will grow.

Its criminalization didn't keep it out of your daughter's hands.

No, because people like you continue to spread it. Some of it gets through the system and hurts those people with whom it makes contact.

Again, you are serving the forces of evil with your constant efforts to spread and enable more drug usage.

the liberals who endorse and promote drug use

I've never endorsed nor promoted drug use - so why did you post this to me?

Liar. Your whole purpose at FR is to promote legalization of ALL drugs.

She was given it at 12 years of age. Something that the proponents of legal use promised would never and could never happen.

Only a fool believes that.

It took me a long time in my life to learn that the things I did that made me cool when I was young, those things that made me fit in with others who did the same things are the things that also made me into an outcast as an adult.

A sophomoric snark from the peanut gallery.

Yes! We should ban booze, pot, cigs, cars and motorcycles, diving boards, dogs, chain saws, fireplaces, playgrounds, cough syrup, swimming, and thousands of other things and activities. Heck, we should probably ban families too.

Together with our friends in the government, we can make the world safe for everyone!

In fact, I would argue that the more we rely on big government to tell us what we should or shouldn't do the less we rely on ourselves and our families, and that makes us more susceptible to danger in the long run.

Amen, Brother FReeper.

Well, it was illegal when she got it but she still got it didn’t she, gee this WOD is so successful.

You don't know how to measure success. We still have murders even though we've been having a "war on murder" since before the nation started.

The current war on drugs keeps the numbers tamped down. If you want to completely eliminate drugs, we will have to start killing drug dealers every time we catch them.

Till we decide to get serious about killing drug dealers, don't talk to me about the success of this one hand tied behind our back effort to interdict drugs.

Again, it is just as if not more successful than the war on murder.

See post 44.

Someone who equates aspirin or Tylenol, cough syrup, cigarettes, booze, coffee, tea or a coke with marijuana might also as well go full on stupid and equate water with meth.

Does one who supports the legality of alcohol and tobacco thereby endorse and promote their use?

I’ve been playing Casino table poker and home table poker games for 20+ years at a decent but not life sustainable profit level. I can unequivocally say that depression is the enemy of gamblers. Not pot, cause dude, I don’t play PLO unless I’m stoned.

Those are all illegal so don’t blame pot for it. She has a self abusing personality and would have tried those no matter if she had tried pot first.

As the super computer said in the movie "War Games"

"The only winning move is not to play."

A lot of people can live happy ordinary lives just so long as someone doesn't expose them to a drug that triggers addiction in them.

Exposing someone new to drugs is an injury to them. Not everyone can handle it.

How about equating marijuana with nuclear weapons, you OK with that?

spreading lies and disinformation about the stuff.

What "lies and disinformation" have I spread?

And why did you not make this accusation to my face (i.e., ping me)?

It is like saying to prevent suicide we have to make all guns and sharp objects illegal.

No, it is not the same thing at all. Possessing a knife or a gun does not tamper with the chemicals in your brain. It has no direct effect on your decision making processes.
