What does everyone think of a music play-off bracket-type poll for best songs of the '80s?
Yes, I’m very eclectic.
Sometimes I’m surprised I know as many hits in the ‘80s from maybe ‘85 - ‘88, because I was heavily into original rock. We had a station (quite popular with us youngsters) and I was buying old tapes and records from used stores, never mind singing them in art class and at work, friends knew me for that. But I guess I did still listen enough to know, because I find I still love alot of that ‘80s stuff then!
I generally don’t like rap/HH or anything like “heavy metal”. I don’t like noise. There are always exceptions, but generally it’s not a good idea for a gift. ;-)
Filmed in Austin - '82
No thanks. Someone else can do that!
I hate videos. They RUIN my vision of songs (OMG - She’s a Beauty and....Safety Dance? OMG!) and music is for listening, not watching. That is why MTV went down - eventually people realized subconsciously (realizing it or not) that having to look at music is a waste of time. Much nicer to have music in the background of other things we are doing, like washing cars, housework, etc!
In the 80s the hard rock stations we listened to in southeast Michigan were WRIF 101 in Detroit and WWWW 104 out of Toledo.
Great stuff! Thanks.
Exactly. I’m sick of fringe fanboys, who overpopulate the internet, trying to tell us some whacked-out boring song that maxed at maybe #35 (often it’s much worse than that) is actually representative of the decade!
My husband found out in the ‘80s that it is called “album-oriented rock”! LOL He told the DJ at college, “So you play the music no one wants to hear at any time!”
So did Pyromania.....
Ooh, my mistake. When he asked for the BEST songs, I thought he meant musically, not because of corporately pushed popularity.
Separate Ways/Worlds Apart-Journey
Brand New Lover- Dead or Alive
You Spin Me Round-Dead or Alive
Don't Go-Yazoo(2011 Live version)
Trust me...I have more.
Steve Perry? don’t know him any relation to the GREAT Joe Perry of Aerosmith? (Now there was a band with a nice portfolio of songs....walk this way why doncha)
If he is the castrata that sings for Journey I just don’t get it. Falsettos like that went out with Frankie Valli (who had a much better voice than Journey)
Agreed. I’m not worried about fringe types using their own tastes. I’m worried about what actually was hugely popular (in this case, since 64 songs out of 10 years is actually pretty narrow). Even if all the internet fringe elitist “artistes” think it’s all tripe.
If you haven’t yet, be sure to see the movie “Stop Making Sense”. It’s one of the few I’ve ever had to go see again at the theatre and check out on home viewing! Did see them live too, Tina was always the coolest chick in R&R.
There was a whole culture of us who shied away from the chart toppers in those days.
I like a lot of them today as a nostalgia thing but avoided them in the 80s. I grew up in a heavy metal farm community out in the sticks.
No, this woman is going by popularity. Which makes it representative. It also gives a solid baseline; anything else is just opinion, and we know what that’s like.
If people on this poll choose “Jump” or “Maneater”, so be it for me!
The music I played in the 80’s that I was told was too loud and wild are now played at football games and in car commercials i.e. Crazy Train and Fly By Night.
OK, so does anyone want to sign up for a ping list right away?
I’d like to have some people to start with, to ensure it has a start. Maybe I’ll give the first round a longer time to pull in voters.
In the Still of the Night by Whitesnake.
Entre Nous by Rush.
