A fight we can win: Stopping Michelle Obama’s war on edible food

What’s on the GOP agenda for 2015? The Keystone Pipeline, tax reform, passing a budget… those are all so last year. How about school lunches?

. . .

Everyone would like to see kids eating nutritious meals, and there’s really no reason they can’t. But as with so many other things in the education arena, that responsibility falls on the parents. They have to educate their children as to what they should be looking for and why it’s important. I manage to eat some veggies every day and fruit as often as I can manage, but in order for that to work out you need good options that somebody would actually want to eat. Sadly, that’s frequently not the case in a school lunch.

There is an economic policy aspect to all of this as well. Nobody is going to benefit from food that winds up in the trash can, and all of that costs money out of already strained school budgets.

. . .

When you start slashing all the salt out of food it becomes bland. Not everyone likes whole grain bread. And broccoli which has been overly steamed and left in a warming tray for twenty minutes isn’t going to have anyone clamoring for more. These plans may have been well intentioned, but like so many other examples of nanny state mandates to save us from ourselves, they don’t translate very well into reality. We’re not talking about enough money to balance the budget or a policy which prevents a war here, but this is still a battle that the GOP can win and send a message to those who would use the government’s fist to control every aspect of our lives.

“So your food groups are sugar, cards and hotdogs?”

No one of my food groups isn’t “cards”, lol.

“But go ahead and believe that the FDA is working for your health and not the Agribusiness”

You know, that is so ridiculous. Let me reiterate what I said in my original comment:

“Coffee was fine, chocolate in moderation was fine. Everyone ate eggs. I’m so sick of the PC food police, fad diets, gluten free annoys the heck out of me and is so unnecessary except for the very few. Plus my grandfather owned bakeries in the suburbs of Chicago long ago. My whole family ate fresh bakery goods and bread. Yummm. And roasts with potatoes and gravy, on Sundays. My grandmother lived to 90, my mom to 91. Fie on all of the PC baloney (pardon the food pun)”

Back when I was growing up and my parents when they were growing up, we all ate bacon, eggs, meat, grains, fruits, fruit juices, veggies, bakery goods, etc. That was long before today’s FDA rules and regs, and agribusiness got in on the act. People ate heartily. They also worked heartily and didn’t sit on their derrieres. I grew up in great physical shape. My dad was a semi-pro baseball player. My older sister played baseball on the women’s teams that played all thru WWII and after into the 1950’s (think the movie A League of our Own). My other sister and I both participated in sports, in my case, a lot of them. We were incredibly active. And we were constantly on the move, even as children always playing outside.

Therein lies the difference, physical activity. So you enjoy your “gluten free” existence eating nuts and berries and a bunch of “health” foods that taste like rotgut. Enjoy your food life.

I eat meats all the time. A filet stuffed with a fresh oyster covered in béarnaise sauce is a specialty. My grilled salmon with buerre blanc sauce is amazing. I have bacon (not processed) and an egg for breakfast almost every day. I fry my eggs in bacon fat. Yummy. I make sweet potato fries in lard. I always fry in lard - I avoid vegetable oils with their omega 6 fats (they are not bad, but the proportion is important). My smoked turkey and baby back ribs are amazing. A wonderful food life. My kids don't like eating out - they would rather I cook for them.

Yes, exercise is not optional, and I work out daily. I eat everything I want, except refined sugars and grains. You should look at a piece of bread as a candy bar, because that is how the body treats it. After I started my diet I lost 35 lbs. But most important, my waist went from 36 to 32 1/2. Belly fat is dangerous.

I'm really enjoying life. Just not carbs and sugars.

Actually, now you’ve made me hungry. Your “menu” above sounds wonderful. Okay, you aren’t a berry and twig eater. Good.

I am really a gourmet chef. I just don't eat grains and sugar, after understanding the science of food.
