TX: Most Armed Robbers are Reluctant to Shoot

This video of an attempted armed robbery in Houston, Texas, illustrates the fact that most armed robbers are reluctant to shoot, and reluctant to kill their victims.   I am not saying that they have high moral standards.  I am saying that robbers respond to incentives; they know that a killing of an innocent brings down unwanted attention; and a shooting brings quicker response and often, greater investigation.

In this case the robber grabs the store owner through a small opening in a bullet proof enclosure and points a gun at him while demanding money.   The wife also grabs the store owner and a tug-a-war ensues.  This goes on for about 20 seconds.  Then the first robber is replaced by a second, who fires a couple of shots.  The shots may be as much an attempt at coercion as an attempt to kill.  The wife accesses a revolver, and the robbers flee the scene.  From click2houston.com:

The couple was helping customers from behind the counter, surrounded with bullet-proof glass, when one of the gunmen reached in from a small opening, grabbed the store owner with one hand and shoved a gun at him with the other

Here you can see the wife in the lower left of the picture with a black revolver in her hands.  If appears that she could use some basic firearms training.  Perhaps a local instructor could donate a few hours.   The first few hours are the most productive.  She was likely reluctant to shoot as well.  The store was robbed of $10,000 a year ago.

The first robber may have been armed with an unloaded, inoperative or fake gun.   It is common to see these used in robberies.

As long as a reasonable level of enforcement in the criminal justice system exists, criminals have incentives to avoid shooting and killing innocents.  This gives the armed victim an advantage that is often put to good use.

Even a small amount of training can bet make a large difference.  Most criminals are not interested in discipline, patience, and practice.

Certainly, all armed robbers are dangerous; there are some that plan on killing their victims, no matter what.   But most of them envision a quick reward for little effort, and have no backup plan when things go bad.

That gives an edge to the armed innocent;  that is the what the system was designed to do.

Duhhh...

They’re mainly just trying to get something for nothing.

It’s the victim who gets REALLY ticked off at being violated in a robbery. If THEY have a gun, they’re likely to use it.

Too bad criminals are too dumb to think things through.

Shooting from the hip even at short ranges take practice I seen many shooter miss full size targets.

There first time trying at shooting from the hip.

As mentioned not having a proper index point makes it even harder.

So true. I put a laser sight on one of the 9 mm (for the wife to have at home). I figured that would make it easy to shoot from the hip, so I took it to our range. Appalling lack of accuracy. Whole lot harder than it looks to shoot from the hip and hit something.

Perhaps God gives the upperhand to the victims rather than the thieves. They are “reluctant” because they go from armed burglary to murder 2 at least. They can’t claim self-defense while doing a crime.

Well, many do.

We’ve all seen the stats when ccw has been passed in areas for the first time, crimes go down an average of about 30% automatically.

Unfortunately not all do. But many don’t want to get shot and they may be the smart ones that decide it isn’t worth it.

Most probably don’t recall what led to store clerks becoming so brave and shooting it out with robbers.

There was a period of black militancy and mostly anti-white (and then some anti-oriental as the “boat people” became clerks) killing during the 1970s when it became the practice for the blacks to execute all the clerks and witnesses, in time the consensus grew that you were going to die anyway, so never let them march you to the cooler, or get you to submit and kneel.

Why do robbers ever hit private businesses when retail chains are so much safer? Anyway, I wonder if anyone ever lays out their store floorplan with a view towards combat? Such as aisles perpindicular to the counters and counterlines re-inforced with bricks and cinder blocks or concrete blocks. Lexan see-through panels.

How about bright strobe lights to blind the robbers or really loud air horns?
Certainly there are some measures that could be taken for the good guys to assisst themselves.

We would build our stores like you describe........ yep agree. Why don’t stores work with a bank type drawer for transactions.....?

I would name the store .....”I’ll be yer huckleberry” ......:o)

Would-be armed robbers reluctant to shoot won’t be around long.

Back in the day, I spent a few weeks high atop the Dallas County courthouse and had conversations with men charged with armed robbery and worse. They said when you go in armed with a gun intending to rob someone, you have go in with the mindset to kill anyone who resists or poses a threat, otherwise there’s a good chance they will kill you. If you’re not mentally primed to use your weapon, you’re courting suicide.

Napoleon Bonaparte famously said, “If you’re going to take Vienna, take Vienna.” In other words, half-measures don’t cut it if you’re really serious, a lesson the US failed to learn in the Korean war, Vietnam, and GHW Bush’s Iraq war.

Lucky to have a number of ranges here in the Texas Panhandle that are private and public.....as ya state some of the public ones have rules you mentioned. Others, individually owned or club memberships allow such shoot an scoot drills etc...... Stay Safe !

How does a convenience store make $10,000 in one day?

“How does a convenience store make $10,000 in one day?”

They might have had several days’ gross on the premises, and it was Christmas eve, one of the busiest times for shoppers...

And in a rough neighborhood, there might be little competition.

$10,000 is only a thousand $10 sales. Typically, these stores are open long hours. At 16 hours, that would be about a transaction a minute. If the transaction was closer to $20, it would be a transaction every two minutes. If they sold gasoline, the typical transaction would be closer to $50, and that would be one every 5 minutes.

fair enough, all the more reason to make gas stations harder targets.
