How much does it cost to run a country? Each year federal, state and local governments confiscate more than $5.7 trillion from the economy, based on 2013 figures. Of that number, $1.1 trillion is eaten by local governments; state governments take in $1.6 trillion, and the federal government consumes more than $3 trillion. And still runs a deficit of hundreds of billions each year.
Part of the problem is that We the People have developed quite a voracious appetite for OPM – other people’s money. Federal aid and entitlement programs consume the lion’s share of the budget; this is called “mandatory spending” and it amounts to around 65 percent of the budget every year (and that will only grow, thanks to the most recent expansion of Medicaid under Obamacare). “Discretionary spending” is that which is subject to the annual congressional appropriations process; it amounts to about 29 percent of the annual federal budget, according to National Priorities, a non-partisan watchdog group that monitors federal spending. Interest on the federal debt – 6 percent currently – takes up the rest of the money.

I’m pretty sure the new farm program did end the subsidies directly to the farmers, there might be some money for export marketing and subsidies for crop insurance.

I have no complaint if a good conservative blogger posts his own material to FR, not as an excerpt to drive hits and discussion back to his blog, but rather to impart useful information to OUR readers and to promote and join in on the discussion and conservative activism HERE on FR.
If a blogger can’t or refuses do that, and if he constantly complains or fights with our participants over it, then I’d just as soon he doesn’t post here. It’s not my job to make his content or his presentation or cooperation acceptable to our readers. That’s his job. And if he cannot do it or refuses to do it and continues posting brief excerpts only and obviously attempting to draw away our participants while loudly complaining about it, then I have no sympathy for his complaints and the more apt I am to ban his account and blog.
I won’t claim to know all the rules and regs for obtaining a farm subsidy, but we lived in a rural area where lots of folks have a home on some land, even if they are not, were not and don’t ever plan to be farmers. I looked at a list of who receives a farm subsidy in the county and I was STUNNED by how many people I knew were never farmers but applied and were awarded basically free money. It should be considered criminal.

It is not the job of government to pick winners and losers, nor is it incumbent upon the people to have their money taken at gunpoint and handed to another. That is not charity, that is theft. That is not supporting an industry, that is theft. That is not helping the economy, that is theft.
Unfortunately; our politicians will not dare touch any subsidies their state gets; unless they want to be voted out of office in the next election. Most of them run their campaigns bragging about how much Federal money (aka taxpayer money) they brought home.
Say what you will about McCain, but that is one thing he will not do for Arizona. He refuses to add “earmarks” to any spending bill for Arizona. and he makes no bones about it.
We need to have a fundamental change in Washington on taxes and spending but they will never get the support from the taxpayers (actually most of them don’t pay taxes but they vote) because almost half of them get government subsidies; and with 5 million new dependents and another 10 to 20 million more on the way it will make it impossible to reform taxes and spending.

It is just the sort of parochial spending request that might lead Senator John McCain, nemesis of pork barrel projects, to give somebody an earful.
The bill would direct $2 million annually over five years to establish a center at a specified law school to honor a renowned jurist from the state. While the goal may be laudable, some critics say, the measure is a classic case of lawmakers’ trying to funnel money directly to a home-state institution for a project that should find financing elsewhere.
But it is doubtful that Mr. McCain will weigh in against the idea this time: the legislation to support the project is being sponsored by him and Senator Jon Kyl, Arizona Republicans who are among those aggressively promoting new rules for handling Congressional spending requests.
I think we didn’t see him sooner was due to his uhmmm clever name.
