Women should never go to jail, no matter what the crime, be it murder, assault, illicit drug dealing, or anything else. That is the idea of Patricia OBrien, an associate professor at the Jane Addams College of Social Work at University of Illinois at Chicago.
In an article in the Washington Post entitled, We should stop putting women in jail. For anything, OBrien made the case that women should never, under any circumstances, go to prison.
OBrien asked questions such as, What purpose is served by subjecting the most disempowered, abused and nonviolent women to the perpetually negative environment of prisons?
Sending females to prison, OBrien argued, doesnt help anything. People and children rely on women, she wrote, much more than men. On top of that, Efforts to make prison work for women have only perpetuated the growth of the prison industrial complex.
What should be done with women who commit crimes? In Britain, OBrien explains, advocates propose community sentences for nonviolent offenders and housing violent offenders in small custodial centers near their families.
And there is evidence that these approaches can work in the United States.

But . . . but . . . Women are equal to men . . .
Moe proof that going to college these days just makes you stupider.
Oh the anti-feminists on YouTube are going to have a field day with this dingbat!
If we do that, only blacks, other minorities, and children will go to jail for crimes. Disparate impact!
I wonder if Patti thinks this applies to women who protest in front of abortion clinics, or who vote Republican.
Or in the latest story about that 3yo kid who was tortured and killed.
so if a woman takes out el presidente....no jail??
Another anecdote to support the old adage: Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.
A correction: The University of Chicago is not the University of Illinois, Chicago. Milton Friedman taught at the University of Chicago a private university; Bill Ayres taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago
If you hate something, just add "industrial complex" to the end of it, and people flock to your side.
It seemed to work wonders for Martha Stewart.
It boggles my mind how liberals think. How much canned air does one have to huff to become this retarded?
It'll probably be pretty good watching.
Nothing like equality under the law.
