When I first heard of Nathan Cirillo being shot at Ottowa's unknown-soldier monument, I just assumed he never saw it coming and couldn't resist simply due to the element of surprise...
Then I heard on Fox yesterday that he was 'unarmed because the posting was ceremonial'... really? Turns out the gun slung-over his shoulder wasn't even loaded.
Anybody out there know if our monument guards are armed with live ammo here in the US? After a bit of research, I've yet to find the answer.
If not, seems insane- such a public target, just a sitting duck standing there on a busy public street as a representative of all the ISIS-sympathizing maniacs hate.
Maybe somebody should have seen this coming up there, esp. in a place like Canada with THE highest immigration rate on the planet (and Muslims coming out the wazoo in most urban centers).
It was bad enough watching unarmed US warriors getting mowed-down while unarmed on-base at Fort Hood, etc... but a guy in full dress uniform standing guarding a military monument sure ought to be ready to defend themselves these days, doncha think?
It is really quite negligent to leave him exposed like that, how do you guard anything -even symbolically- without a real, live gun on you, anyway?
Next we need to take a hard look at all our military bases... why on Earth are our people in uniform being kept from protecting themselves, I'd sure like to know- there is ZERO reason to allow Fort Hoods to happen again: as is so often the case these days, the answer is plenty simple, just not one the left can learn to accept. - See more at: http://reaganiterepublicanresistance.blogspot.com/2014/10/canadian-soldier-ambushed-by-islamic.html#more

I looked it up myself. Apparently the weapons of the Old Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns are unloaded. This is supposedly as a mark of respect, and has been, I believe the policy since the beginning.
FWIW, the practice of issuing live ammo only for specific reasons goes way back in the military, as in centuries.
Might be time to reexamine it.
The powers to be are more worried about unintentional discharges, suicides, solider on solider violent.
Then protecting a few.
The Washington Navy Yard shooting...Soldiers at the yard were not allowed to carry guns.
I heard on Right-Wing Hate Radio (don’t remember which show) that the guards at Arlington are not armed.
I hope this changes, immediately.
“Might be time to reexamine it.”
You got that right. Criminals and terrorists don’t respect the law, so it’s insane for the law to hamstring peace-loving citizens and honorable public servants.
Where’s humblegunner whining about someone pimping a web site?
If the military would not distribute ammunition to the marines guarding the Marine Corp barracks in Beiruit, they sure wouldn’t issue it to a marine guarding a monument.
I would not be surprised if the rifle also had the firing pin removed, to make it unable to fire even if he happened to have ammo in his pocket.
As long as the poster posts the "meat" of the article, rather than just a teaser that requires you to go to the site to see what it's about, I have no problem.
On a day to day basis, there is no larger group of unarmed people you will find, than military personnel on a U.S. installation. For every 1,000 personnel, there might be 1 that is armed.
Empty guns are dangerous and foolish.
Not only am I certain that the guns are not loaded, I’m fairly certain that the guns are also demilled, meaning they aren’t really guns at all, but just decorative accessories to the uniform.
The only time that I’ve seen ceremonial guards that I felt were truly armed was when I visited the crown jewels in 1986. Those Tommies had assault rifles with bayonets mounted with extra ammo mags, and when child ran under the ropes, the guard stamped down on the pavers so hard that the child made a 180 and fled. Although an argument could be made the the Royal Horse could always make use of their swords and lances.
Right, as long as uniforms are a ‘target’ on and off the battlefield, it’s only fair that soldiers be permitted to defend themselves.
A guy dressed up in a N American urban center like that is just a sitting duck for terrorists... what if he had ammo in that rifle?
Could have been a lot different outcome- you are right, reexamine it
Exactly
I didn’t want that stupid (dead) link, you know- looks like crap too-
It’s some new thing when you copy n paste a Blogspot blog it adds code for a URL at the end, to supposedly keep people from plagiarizing my stuff easily- so it caught me taking my own post lol
I forgot about that feature and just pasted my own post quickly- didn’t seem worth wasting the moderator’s time to get it fixed
Mogger made that same cut-and-paste statement in over half a dozen websites. I’m a little puzzled by it.
