In 2000, Michigan had 580,000 people on food stamps. By 2011, that number had grown to 1.9 million people as nearly 1 in 5 Michigan residents were on the Food Assistance Program.
But after 11 consecutive years of increases, Michigan has seen the number of people on food stamps decrease the past two years, according to the states annual reports.
After reaching the high-water mark of 1,928,478 in 2011, the number of people on food stamps dropped to 1,828,384 in 2012 and then to 1,775,646 in 2013.
Don Grimes, an economist for the University of Michigan, said the recent decrease looks to be driven by the improving economy.
"There is a very strong negative correlation (-0.61) between the change in the number of people collecting food stamps and the number of people holding jobs (measured on either the household or establishment basis), Grimes said. Food stamp usage grew faster than expected given the growth in employment in 2010 and 2011 when eligibility criteria were loosened."
Bob Wheaton, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Human Services, said the state is reviewing what could be behind the drop in food stamps recipients and would have a response by mid-September.
The Food Assistance Program offers temporary food assistance for eligible low-income families. The state issues Bridge Cards for recipients.
Has the murder rate gone up in Detroit?
Are the killers now cannibalizing their victims?
The number of people on food stamps in Michigan has gone down because many of them have moved to another state.
The Indiana, Illinois and Ohio food stamp population has gone up, I wonder why?
Only because they’ve died from lack of health care.
improving economy - come now. the economy has nothing to do with it - people are leaving Michigan and guess what welfare recipients which includes some food stamp recipients are being cut off after 48 months (4 years).
Up here in the UP of Michigan more small businesses are closing their doors permanently. More houses are for sale. More houses are even vacant, but not for sale yet as the people walked away from the motgage and the home.
This is only because the locusts have completely depleted all the free stuff in Detroit and have swarmed to other “Progressive” cities to strip them before moving on to the next.
Its the one thing they work hard at.
The murder rate in Detroit is down considerably. Open Carry, stand your ground, and a pro self defense police chief are doing as intended.
Well that’s a good thing.
Police Chief’s weekly report.
They left to go join ISIL,,,
dont worry they’ll be back..
The govt. just arbitrarily cancelled the bridge cards on many recipients here in Michigan.
I know one such elderly person who had his cancelled for no reason at all. He's now going thru the process to reapply for it.......
I think it means that the survivors are moving out.
Exactly - the only way that the food stamp rate in Detroit is going down is through attrition.
Bump for later.
