Robin Williams didn’t die from a disease, he died from his choice

I’m not normally one to write a blog post about a dead celebrity, but then I suppose there is no such thing.

There are only living celebrities, not dead ones. In death, wealth and prestige decay and we are brought into a new reality, the only reality there is or ever was — one which, for much better or much worse, doesn’t care at all about our popularity or our money.

The death of Robin Williams is significant not because he was famous, but because he was human, and not just because he left this world, but particularly because he apparently chose to leave it.

Suicide.

Because you’re dismissive and judgmental of those who have suffered/are suffering. It borders on self-righteousness and self-righteousness is just a phony form of respectability.

, Most powerfully well stated, emotionally heart felt rejoinder I've ever seen posted here.

See it as you choose. But ‘all’ people deal with suffering in one form or another, heartache and letdowns as well as dissatisfaction with their life at various times. Many in vastly worse condition then Williams and they don’t quit life and leave a pile of broken hearts in their wake.

The man was in his 60’s and had a lifetime of battling his issues so he knew the consequences having experienced them time and again. It’s not like his recent issues were not played out in his life prior or new to him.

Bottom line is he decided ‘he didn’t want to deal with it anymore’ and said goodbye to all....be it under the influence of substances or not....and it certainly wasn’t the first time he’d been on that edge.

If my compassion and heart go out to any it’s his family and those who loved him...it’s their hearts breaking and grieving for no doubt they loved him much.

Imagine what the liberals would be doing/saying if he had used a firearm...

Dude you just don’t get it. May you or someone you love never suffer from clinical depression. There but for the grace go you.

They’re arrogant enough to smart off, “Don’t YOU judge me!”

....”They were not right with the Lord. It is impossible to love the Lord and live your life for the Lord and kill yourself”....

No it’s not......could you take the life of someone beating on a family member til they’re inches from death. I suspect those who take their life feel just that way...they’ve been beat up long enough and throw in the towel.

Everyone has threshholds of tolerance... physically and mentality. Looks like Williams had both. Some were self induced others were not. But the combination certainly wasn’t conducive to a good outcome no matter how you paint it.

I have to give a bit of credit to the guy....he made it to 60 some odd years fighting his issues.....that’s a great deal more than most who give up at the first sight of discomfort and this at a much younger age. Be it purposeful or accidental suicide....the end result is always the same..death eventually. And that comes to us all no matter how careful we might be in life.

People don’t take drugs because they’re happy.

I’m not a dude....and you can give it any name you want....from clinical depression...to one who suffered from all the other vices he brought into his life which compounded his problem early on...and he knew and spoke of the fact these indeed do that.

Read ‘his own statements’ of abuse of his body and lifestyle....I’ll take his own words over that of other people who think they know where he was at.

People who are severely depressed and/or are manic depressive/bi-polar are not able to think clearly.

But there are people who suffer such overwhelming despair that nothing seems to help and someone like Robin Williams could not cope for reasons we can’t fathom.

So I am afraid your advice is not a one size fits all cure.

Agreed. Thank you.

I think it’s great that you found something that helped you, but your hostility and lack of compassion toward others is puzzling. Why, if you are doing so well, are you so angry?

....” he certainly was no Christian and last time I checked only Christians inherit the Kingdom of God”....

You don't know what he was......so you can't speak for God in this matter as you seem to be doing.

There are plenty of Christians battling their own vices and illnesses, mental and otherwise and both. And those who have taken their life when they've simply had enough of it.

Life itself wears us out and the older we get the more difficult it is to bare the infirmities the world hands out...and the more difficult it is for medical help that works on an aging body. Some don't see suicide or the taking of their life as a hurtful thing to others, though it always is. Death of someone will always bring grief...it goes with the nature of loosing those loved...be it by ones own hand or that of some other source.

I'd like to think the Lord would give us all we need to endure til our time draws to a close....but that is not the reality of medicine and machines we live in today. ..which can extend life beyond what is life...and beyond what HE intends.

We don't know if Williams was given more bad news that set him over the edge he was all too familiar with....he made a decision to stop whatever he saw as his own suffering..and likely believed that of others as well....he obviously had a mind that didn't operate with all systems connecting.

God will certainly look at Williams 'motive' more than the act itself....and it's there we leave it alone because we don't know his life as God does...and He knew Williams would be where He was when he took his life, and all the hours contemplated before that.

Agree 100%

Most of the people I know who took drugs were somehow convinced to give them a try, found that they liked taking the drug and then took them until they were addicted and could not stop.

After a time, drugs took control of their lives, ruined their health, their families and their jobs.

Most just ruined their lives and the lives of their families and were left to pick up the pieces.

Some died in car wrecks or stupid accidents while stoned, others died from ODs, others died from drug related health problem, but the largest number committed suicide because of all of the above.

Most were happy, well adjusted and high functioning people who got involved with drugs from casual drug use and who subsequently became addicted and entered a downward spiral. I hate drugs with passion because I have watched them ruin the lives of so many people. I am not real big fan of booze for similar reasons.

“Try the other way around. “

For some. For RW, it was drug induced depression.

I understand. I’ve seen it too, and feel a sense of grief and helplessness in trying to respond to those who have addictions. Mostly, I feel that I have failed, but it doesn’t make me love them any less.

“I have to give a bit of credit to the guy....he made it to 60 some odd years fighting his issues.....”

Fighting his issues? Give me a break. Like millions of other people he had in the past problems with alcohol and drugs. He went in for rehab. For the vast majority of people their family means more to them that their love affair with the bottle and drugs. Can you tell me the name of a doctor that has came out and said Robin Williams was a lifelong sufferer of severe depression? Not a person has said it. Just the media, automatically assuming he had all these mental health problems because he fallen off the wagon. Had he been institutionized for mental health problems? Not once, twice, but numerous times. Not that I’m aware of. Not the first time for depression. Problems with booze yes. What he did do is do stand-up comedy and make fun of his boughts with booze and drugs. Save your sympathy for 100% SC veterans suffering very real PTSD.
