QuikTrip coming to grips with destruction of Ferguson store

Updated with information about the Wal-Mart that was damaged Sunday night.

Sunday night’s unrest in Ferguson left the QuikTrip at 9420 West Florissant Ave. a burned wreckage. At the moment the company has no plans for rebuilding or even a process for how to make that decision; it has never faced a similar situation.

QuikTrip spokesman Mike Thornbrugh said there have been “no discussions whatsoever” about whether to rebuild. Instead, the Tulsa-based company, which had 2013 revenue of $11.2 billion, is focusing on its employees and customers, he said.

Thornbrugh said the cost of the damage had not yet been assessed, but he expects the destruction of the convenience store’s structure and merchandise will likely total seven figures.

Employees who were working at the QuikTrip Sunday night made it out safely before the store was looted and burned in the chaos that followed a peaceful vigil for Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old man who was shot dead by a police officer Saturday.

Thornbrugh said employees of the store are being offered counseling and, once they are comfortable, the opportunity to transfer to another store while the company decides whether to rebuild.

Quiktrip is leaving security of the site to the police for now. As Thornbrugh said, “With all due respect, there’s nothing left to protect.”

The Wal-Mart at 10741 W. Florissant Ave. was also damaged Sunday.

A Wal-Mart spokesman said a "significant amount of merchandise" was taken from the store, which opened at 2 p.m. Monday but will close at 6 p.m. rather than 11 p.m.

Wal-Mart officials will determine later the store's hours moving forward.

Can we just refer to them as Urban Feral Trash?

We could, but they are just the shock troops of the Free S**t Army. Looting is just a way to supplement the subsidies.

I’m stunned. Not a cracker in the barrel.

If insurance applies, I guarantee their rates will go up. It will become uneconomic to do business there.

I preduct QT will never make an announcement out a new Ferguson store. it would be stupid to rebuild, but the day the announce that they won’t, every QT around the country becomes a target.
