MO: Dog shot during home invasion
Gun Watch ^ | 6 August, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

I am surprised more dogs are not shot during home invasions.   Maybe home invaders tend to invade homes without dogs.   The reporting is tantalizingly vauge in this article from ksd.com:

NewsChannel 5 has learned the intruder forced his way inside four-unit building and made his way up some stairs. The resident of the home fired five to seven shots. The suspect ran from the scene. The victim says he thinks he might recognize the suspect's voice but isn't certain.

(snip)

The victim was not injured. Authorities say a dog was shot and injured by the crossfire and ran away from the home.
"Crossfire" indicates that there was a gunfight, yet the article never mentions that the intruder had a weapon or fired it.

Was the dog defending the house when it was hit?

We will probably never find out, but dogs act as alarms and a front line defense force.

Dogs are a great addition to a home defense system.

The intruder was probably an off-duty cop.

When someone knocks at my door, my dog starts barking and runs full speed and hits the door with his 75 pounds, shaking the house. I hope that would scare off anyone with bad intent. However if anyone comes in the house, they are in danger of being licked to death. Fernando can by scary but he is no guard dog.

Badly written report or an unusually stupid intruder, breaking in unarmed against an armed occupant and a large dog.

One is putting themselves for a lot of liability if one owns a dog that bites people.

A dog that barks a lot and look bad but is really a big baby is much better.

A lot of the benefits with out the liability

My basset is the same way.. his bark will scare ya till he tossed the hound howl in...

You can hear him running for the door as well, but it takes a while (short legs) for him to get there.

A dog is shot during a home invasion. Was the home invaded by criminals or cops?

I think the answer to this is in the strategy of home invasion. To start with, let me suggest some clarity with the three different types of crime.

1) Burglary. Unarmed theft in either an unoccupied building or apartment, or when the burglar and the victims do not interact.

2) Armed robbery. The intent is to burglarize, but the criminal is armed in case they encounter the victim. The focus remains theft.

3) Home invasion. The intent is to rob an occupied building or apartment, and maybe to brutalize or kill the occupants, whether they are armed or not.

So the bottom line is that the emphasis is either on theft or violence against people. Dogs aren’t really considered unless the invader knows there are dogs and they are a threat. This would typically be a high yield illegal drugs and cash matter.

Police, on the other hand, always calculate dogs into the equation, with the understanding of shoot first, because courts limit liability for dead dogs to just $300-500.

Maybe home invaders tend to invade homes without dogs.

What a novel thought!
