Southeast New Mexico is facing a crisis that cuts at the heart of Christian faith and practice.
With Immigration and Customs Enforcement bringing some 600 Central American refugees to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, local citizens are rallying. Tragically, the most vehement response is exceptionally negative, couched in fear, fueled in politicized rhetoric and grounded in anything but biblical, moral and humanitarian concerns.
As faith leaders and pastors in Eddy and Lea Counties, we call for Christian grace, morality and common sense given the looming crisis. We commend events like a planned July 15 interfaith vigil at Immaculate Conception Church, 619 Copper NW in Albuquerque at 6 p.m.
Scripture repeatedly and unapologetically calls us to welcome the stranger, the orphan, the widow. Leviticus 19:33-34 recalls when the people of God were unwanted immigrants in Egypt. Central to the biblical narrative is the call to remember the treatment of the Hebrew people so we never return such inhumanity upon others.
Jesus emphasized this vital law of Gods grace and welcome. Most notably, Matthew 25 reminds us that salvation hinges on caring for the least of these. James writes that for faith to be authentic, it must prioritize our care for the orphans and widows in distress. As Central American women and children are brought to our backyard in Eddy County, Christianity demands compassion.
Extending hospitality to the stranger is not an easy practice. We fear what we dont understand. Accordingly, many have expressed outrage at the decision to house these immigrants at FLETC.

The way that the Democrats are arguing on this matter is interesting. They talk all around the subject. It leads me to believe that there is money in this for the Democrats.
Sometimes the greater act of compassion is to say "No, I will not enable your continued sin. I will not empower you to destroy yourself -- and me with you."
THAT is what we should be telling these people, and more importantly, their enablers. "Do NOT send them here. They are YOUR problems to deal with, not ours."
Horsespit and pablum claptrap.
Pastors need to stick to the gospel and not social reconstruction. I’m about as tired of them and their opinions as I am “celebrities”. One has slightly more reasoning ability than the other.
I would tend to disagree- several hundred years ago thousands of French Canadian families crossed illegally into northern NY State -settled near Saratoga -
The NY governor protested the illegality of it all and the Canadian governor of the Province begged and pleaded and they worked out a deal, but it was illegal period for them to cross the border..some also settled next to my grandma`s house.
I doubt very much if Canada would allow thousands of Americans to cross their border illegally into Canada- well duhhhhh I wonder why- coz it is illegal!
If we as a society had the practice of washing our feet prior to coming into a house after a dusty walk, then the practice would have had more significance for you(...especially if the pastor and deacons of a church had done the foot washing....as a way of explaining how Christ was a servant to us all and so were they). If you read the story, Christ washed all of his disciples feet and gave a lesson on Christian love and Christian leadership...”He who is the leader of all is the servant of all”
I think the way that these foot washing services go...with everyone washing each other’s feet... that Christ’s massage of servant hood and leadership is lost or diluted. To see immoral DEM politicians do it like Pelosi is cynical and is a mockery to Christ!
So go to Guatemala or Nicaragua and help them.
Different times, and a deal was reached. They were farmers and tradesmen getting their largesse from the land, and the government didn’t exactly give them free cell phones and welfare. Also did they maintain their allegiance to France(or had the British taken Quebec by then)? The question was whether or not the story of Jacob and family being “invited” to Egypt formed a theological argument to justify the overwhelming of our borders by illegals from other lands as abetted by avowed Marxists who hate our country and want to destroy it?
The least among us would seem to be the displaced American workers, particularly the black workers, who are displaced in disproportionate numbers, and the companies, particularly the small contractors, who will not hire illegals. How can the rule of law survive if they are not given remedies for the injustices done to them?
So we need to allow everyone in the world in who wants to come here?
He probably defends homosexual marriage, never mind what the Bible says.
I am beginning to hate these people. No logic, no common sense. Just feel-good garbage.
The trouble is that we already send these countries huge amounts of aid, that is probably stolen by the Jefes. Their own leaders are exporting their dregs so they can get out of paying the social costs. Mexico prints pamphlets informing its citizens on sneaking into the US to get free medical care. This is an act of sabotage, frankly! For every illegal alien stepping on our southern border I would charge Mexico $100,000, and take it out of their accounts in NY. This nonsense would dry up in a heart beat.
We are more generous than any nation on Earth. So enough with the moralizing.
We are not going to be Uncle Sucker. Most of our states and education systems are out of money. We cannot take thousands of students, period! Our inner cities are apocalyptic crime zones - and we do nothing to stop that violence. Funny, Obama worries more about violence in Guatemala than he does in Chicago!
Why are we not making Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala pay for this! Where is their contribution? Why isn’t the UN in these countries investigating all these rapes? If it is a crisis then let us get the world involved. Why does only America need to pay.
Theology had nothing to do with Jacob- He and his family were starving in a famine
Whether the Bible is clear or not, Alinsky certainly was...
RULE 4: The fourth rule is: Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules.
You can kill them with this, for they can no more obey their own rules
than the Christian church can live up to Christianity.
Worshiping the invader is false doctrine promulgated by churches seeking to increase their power by bringing in members. IT IS NOT COMPASSION IT IS TREASON to assist the invasion. WAKE UP!
Bunch of stupid hippies. Hope they all get scabies.
I believe in Christian compassion. We should put the illegals in camps, feed them, clothe them, treat their lice, and diseases, and send them home where they belong, where they can work to make their countries better places to live. Give them Christian love, and send them on their way.
This border invasion is a POLITICAL “crisis”. It’s time for the atheist, commie ‘RATS to leave God, the Bible and Christianity out of it. It’s that “church and state” thing that the commies are always crowing about. The DemocRATS need to have their asses kicked for “thumping” the Bible to pimp their communist politics.
Liberals sure forget their “separation of church and state” mantra when it’s self serving.
This prophecy of Gods judgment from Deuteronomy 28 was originally given to Israel but seems very appropriate for us at this time.
Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, and your eyes shall look and fail with longing for them all day long; and there shall be no strength in your hand. A nation whom you have not known shall eat the fruit of your land and the produce of your labor, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually.........
The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.........
Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you......
a nation of fierce countenance, which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you. They shall besiege you at all your gates until your high and fortified walls, in which you trust, come down throughout all your land; and they shall besiege you at all your gates throughout all your land which the LORD your God has given you.
