Enough of foreign affairs for one week, heres some important news: its Key lime season again and that means the giant Key lime pies are finally back in the coolers at Costco.
They are monstrously good, if you like a little tart with your sweet and who doesnt?
Additionally, it's actually good for you; packed with tons of vitamin C that can prevent scurvy, a disease that has recently reemerged, especially around Washington D.C..
The vitamin C is harvested by scraping off the limes incredibly thin skin and then reaming the heck out those little
berriesorbs.
I dont know if the pie provides any protection from another old ailment that has also raised its ugly head again: beriberi (alternate spelling, barrybarry) which is caused by a B (boy) vitamin deficiency.
Beriberi is a disease caused by a lack of Vitamin B1 (thiamin). The thiamin-deficiency disorder is characterized by muscle weakness.
Butt I say why take any chances when you can score a whole pie for $11.99 that will easily serve 20 people.

Also..most people end up using the bottled Persian lime juice..if you use FRESH limes, and also zest them..it's much better...
Last Easter I wanted to make key lime pie but it seemed that there wasn’t a key lime to be had in Everett. I didnt want to use regular limes.I found something called Nelly and Joe’s key lime juice. Now I use it by choice. It keeps in the refrigerator like RealLemon and is also good in cocktails. No more having to but an expensive bag of key limes and not knowing what to do with the remainder.
I also found a vanilla cookie crust recipe in the King Arthur Flour cookbook that people seem to like, though a variety of crusts are acceptable.
I thought this was a thread about pie.
Has this thread gotten mixed up with another one or something? I don’t need people talking about things like that on a food thread.
What other kind is there? The only other thing Ive seen called key like pie is kind of a lime flavored cheesecake.
I’m from up north though.
To recap: Ive tried both the sweetened condensed versions and cream cheese versions and prefer the former. Key limes are definitely different. A bottle of Nelly and Joes isnt that expensive when you consider the mileage you get out if it.
Has anybody read Queen of the Underworld by Gail Godwin? A character insists on going to the Woolworth lunch counter in Miami because of the key lime pie. It’s set in the fifties, no more Woolworth lunch counters, or Woolworth’s, for that matter.
Love Nellie & Joe’s ... I use it in most places where you’d normally use lemon juice — for example, it’s great in a chicken marinade with garlic, oregano, a little olive oil, and salt and pepper.
Having said that, Costco does make a good key lime pie. But they make a much better NY Cheesecake. They also have a chocolate cake whose decadence reaches the lower limits of ostentatious culinary turpitude.
An easy cool lime pie can be made with cool whip, lime jello, vanilla pudding... refreshing on a hot summer day

LOL....love that pie and love this thread ;) Including 0’s workout pic, in the story line, was masterful!
That sounds good.
and it makes a darn good pie.
Have you had their carrot cake? Oh. My. Goodness.
I am a carrot cake addict. But I hardly ever see it at Costco. It must be a local thing. It seems like every time I find a product I like, they stop selling it.
Those tea cookies look great! I’ll have to try that recipe.
I’m making key lime cupcakes tomorrow for a get-together.
Key limes do grow a bit bigger than those tiny things usually found in stores. I was used to getting them from my grandfather’s prized tree.
PS: MISS YOU, MOTUS!
It is ... marinate in the fridge overnight to improve the flavor ... yum!
I’ve used the juice. It tastes almost as good as fresh.
” Its set in the fifties, no more Woolworth lunch counters, or Woolworths, for that matter.”
Simpler times.
