If a driver collides with me while they're texting I hope I'm this sane and rational...

Some people can actually handle such multi-tasking. Then again, it only takes one screw up to permanently tarnish one's record.

I can’t wait until they are common here as well. There’s plenty of crazy stuff that happens on our roads too.

Oh yeah! Best was that truck carrying 119 propane tanks which were not properly secured; then driver hits a bus.

Luckily, nobody was hurt.

The phone company has a log of every SMS you’ve ever sent.

Road sensors? Not in these parts. There are cameras up by the lights around here. Haven’t seen a road sensor in quite a while.

...which is how I fought a texting-while-driving ticket in court. I won.

I do not understand the level of anger over texting and driving. The number of drivers on the road are at historic highs, yet the number of accidents, the numbers of accidents with injuries, and the number of fatal accidents are lower per mile driven they were 10 years ago. They are even lower than the were in 1950.

If driving and texting was causing so many accidents wouldn't there be more accidents than there were before there were texting devices? Maybe some people are idiots and will find a way to distract themselves and cause accidents whether it be the radio, turning around in their seat to smack their little bundles of joy, putting on lipstick, shaving, reading the paper, playing the clarinet (ya, I've see a lot of weird stuff), or any number of idiotic things that are easily as distracting as texting.

Why focus on the device that is probably one of your most effective and time saving devices. Do you know how many hours I've saved by having a conversation while driving? Is talking somehow distracting? Maybe we should ban all conversations in a car.

The whole thing just smacks of big brother nanny state-ism. Charge anyone with distracted driving if the are guilty of it. You can see from someone phone history if they were texting when an accident occurred.

I say this as someone that was rear ended while I was stopped in traffic by someone that was texting. I've also been rear ended by a woman who was so busy arguing with her boy friend that she wasn't paying attention. I can't say that either was fun, but singling out one activity is decidedly strange. Is it because with a cell phone we are less dependent upon a myriad of government services?

If you trust a computer to do anything that involves life and death decisions you are a complete fool

Not really. Computers do most of the work of flying modern airplanes because they do a far better job than human pilots. It isn't unreasonable to expect the same transition to take place in cars as well.

I do not have anything against computers specifically. You and I both know that allowing one to handle car driving during heavy traffic is insanity. The computer on the airplane is not the one flying at take off or landing or in heavy traffic.

The reason that computers ‘fly’ modern planes is because they have so darned many control systems on them. I would not say that it is any better than human fliers in fact when an error is made the plane just keeps going no matter what.....Korean Air flying into russian air space and being shot down....Korean Air landing short at SFO because the copilot was new to that airport and didn’t know what to do....The list does go on. But that’s not really the point. You and I both know that computers freeze, they can be misprogrammed, the computer can be hacked....the problems go on and on.

Fly if you want to but I decided before 9/11 even happened that I wouldn’t be taking flights for travel anymore.
